Niche Research by Eric
Hello, and thanks for following along in Mark’s excellent 12 Week Program! So far, there has been some great info!
Ok, when I originally got selected to participate I already had a niche in mind. My first one is in the Pocket Knife/Knives niche. How I stumbled upon the niche is a whole different story, but let’s take a look at it for a minute.
The original reason I decided to go ahead with the Pocket Knife/Knives niche is because of it’s high number of bids on eBay. To me, simply having bids in the double digits is a very good indicator that there is some potential. Once I find a niche that has a bunch of bids, I then go to Wordtracker and see what I can see!
BTW, if you do not have the full version of Wordtracker, I highly suggest it! I know it’s a bit pricey, but what I did was the free trial, then tried the 1 month subscription…and it literally paid for itself and THEN SOME! I’m now a full year subscriber, and don’t know what I’d do without it!
So after determining that my competition isn’t very “schooled” in the ways of BANS, I hit up Wordtracker for some info on the general term “Pocket Knives”. I’m a big believer in getting a good domain name, that actually contains your main keyword phrase that you’ll be targeting. Here is what I narrowed the search down to:
                                                     Keyword                                            Search    Comp    Google KEI
| 1 | 202 | 320 | 6,980 | 5.85 | 6,590 | 6.19 | 36,000 | 1.13 |
Those 4 terms get a good amount of searches, and have really good KEI. The Vintage Pocket Knives term I included also because there are only 3,970 competing pages…and I can get a good EzineArticles article to rank well for that term. Also, I was meaning to ask Mark why the KEI is so low for this term….and if it’s still a term worth targeting as a store page due to the relatively low competing pages????
Now, I’ve only used two resources….eBay and Wordtracker….to find a niche that has some demand. Other people use much more than those two….personally, I like to keep things simple! I do occasionally use TeraPeak, but not that often. Remember, there has to be demand in order for a store to work well. Find something people are searching for….and buying….and then deliver it to them! That’s all it takes!
I’ve determined that those are all good terms and I want to type those exact terms into GoDaddy to see if I can get a domain name for any of them..example: www. collectablepocketknives .com. Welp, they’re all taken….so now I need to pick the best one and search for an alternative, such as www. mycollectiblepocketknives .com. I’d love to hear Mark’s input on this one! Which do you think is the best term to go after???
Ok, I’m just about out the door….going away for the weekend, but wanted to post something here before I left! Hopefully this has given you a little bit of an idea of how I go about determining a worthy niche, and a possible domain name. Like Mark has said, getting a good domain name that is “keyword rich” is important. I have yet to register a domain for this site, but we’ll see what Mark thinks! Maybe that’ll be in the next section!….

whoops!…doesn’t look like my keyword terms got posted correctly!….they are:
collectible pocket knives
affordable pocket knives
discount pocket knives
vintage pocket knives
Mark…can you help me out w/that….not so good at posting screenshots! :(
Eric – When choosing a domain name I try combinations as you’ve done and also add ‘store,’ ‘shop,’ or ‘buy’ to my keywords. That usually brings up available URLs that I can purchase.
Hi Eric,
You may also try KeywordSpy for your keyword research.
“Find something people are searching for….and buying….and then deliver it to them! That’s all it takes!”
Eric, Thanks for the great quote! I printed it out and put it on my monitor
(a little something to help me stay focused)
BANS on!
