Any Directory Owners out There?

Looking for a little help from anyone who may run their own directory… aka Link Directory, Resource Directory, If you don’t know what I mean yet… well, you probably won’t be able to help!

I have the need to add a well featured and easily managed directory to a site and wanted to know opinions on the link directory you might use. I have ALREADY done a bit of homework and already run two other directories of my own! I anticipate it to be popular simply due to the niche, so I don’t want to have to deal with doing it all manually, although that is NOT out of the question!

So…

  • Do you have a link or resource directory?
  • Is it free, paid or both?
  • Do you have a WordPress powered site with a directory?
  • Have you used any of the WordPress directory plugins? If so, whats your opinion?

Finally… if you want to recommend ANYTHING about link and resource directories, please do. Also, you do not have to link to your site… I understand! :-)

My Own Directory Info

When I find the right software to manage it… (and I am leaning to phpld and wrapping it into a WP theme) the resource directory will have the following:

  • WordPress powers the site, so I prefer a WP plugin (I already have 1 and dislike, more than I like!)
  • Free but Editorialized Review for EVERY site, like DMOZ! (Not all sites will get in)
  • Express Reviews (Small Fee for Express Review of Submission)
  • Roughly 12-15 MAIN Categories, and no subcategories! (Very tightly focused niche directory)
  • Thumbshots, PageRank, etc

So… back to the original question…

Do You Run a Directory? If so, Please do Share Info! :-)

@Daniel – Thanks Daniel! I have phpld running elsewhere also, but just havent merged it with WP yet. Maybe I will jump an install next week and see how it goes.

I LOVE the flex with phpld, I just hate the setup! LOL

Thanks again!! I will let you know how the merge goes if I take that route.

I have thought about starting something along these lines before.
Something automated that would allow people to post links and pay to have an “upgraded” profile with no ads on or something, would be perfect.

Hey Mark, I’m running a free travel link directory but it’s really just in testing right now at this point. It’s free but you have to register on my site to use it which is a quick 10 second process. Feel free to test it out. Just find something on the web that’s interesting and related to travel or outdoor recreation and give it a whirl.

Here’s the details. It’s on WordPress with a Buddypress install. The actual link directory is created using the plugin “Buddypress Links”. The potential is huge I think but I’ve noticed a bug with creating internal links. Sometimes they go to my homepage. I have not pin pointed the issue yet but external links work fine. This is my first buddypress install and I really like it so far.

Anyone interest in testing it out please feel free to do so as I really need some testers. Also it has thumbs and a widget and you can view a widget on my homepage of top links.
