BANS Templates for WordPress - StudioPress Themes!

August 1, 2008

BANS Templates for WordPress

Yes - You read it right…

ALL 4 of the StudioPress Optimized WordPress themes will work with this BANS Template Package!

Whoops - Someone Found a Bug! Temporarily on Hold… (08/01/08-7:50PM)
Fixed: 08/01/08 - 8:00 pm ET

I have all of them installed for a working demo at:  http://studiop.trybans.com/ but since I do not have a theme switcher installed, you can only view the main template on the WordPress side. To see the 4 different themes in BANS however:

  1. Standard BANS StudioPress
  2. BANS StudioPress Green
  3. BANS StudioPress Red
  4. BANS StudioPress Orange

These themes have been made very popular over at Daily Blog Tips, and you will need to get the WordPress themes from this page, don’t worry though… they are FREE! You will need: StudioPress Theme, SP Green, SP Orange, and SP Red!

After you have the themes, you can purchase the 4-Pack of BANS Templates for Wordpress theme StudioPress for only $29.00 at the bottom of the BANS Templates page!

Edit: In light of Dave (Soggy, a BANS Administrator) releasing these same themes on the same day, I have decided to make these free. Donations are always welcome!

At this time, these themes are designed to work with your BANS store in a directory, not on the root of your domain! They have been thoroughly tested and from what I can tell - NO BUGS! If however you do find one, please post it in the comment of this page.

As with all newer BANS WordPress templates, upload the BANS theme, change 2 files to reference your domain, and you are done!

FAQ:

Q: Getting a No Style.css Error
A:
I have only included a few of the theme files for the WordPress theme, before they will work, you MUST you will need to get the WordPress themes from this page. After downloaded and installed, the files in my zip will be added.

Q: Wheres the BANS search Box?
A: I actually left it out on purpose for my own needs… if you wish to have the BANS search functionality, open the header.php file of the BANS theme you are using and add the following to the very bottom:

<?=$front->search();?>

Mark, check out your links. They don’t look like the ones you have on this page, very dark - no white background on the sidebar.

    Hi Mark,

Oh man…I’ve been using these Wordpress themes for some BANS sites I started. BANS is in the root and the blog is in the …/blog directory. Oh well, I do like this Wordpress themes though.

I think I already know the answer but is there any work around once the BANS store is set up in the root directory? Can you do backups of the BANS store and blog, do a switcheroo with the directory structure, then re-load with the blog in the root directory?

I’ll just use your Simple CSS template as this is probably too much work but was just curious.

A yes or no answer is fine. Your a busy guy.

    Thanks, Mark M

Part 2 — Looks great with IM but NOT Firefox

    Bob

  4. Mike Debyah on August 1st, 2008 7:20 pm

Yeah, huge difference between IE and Firefox! They do look good in IE though! Hope you can get this fixed for FF and I’ll be buying.

  5. Mark on August 1st, 2008 9:29 pm

Themes are all set everyone… missing Div will get ya every time!

@ Mike - I will have a set of these for the blog in a folder within a few days. They will be added to the current set and included in the cost as well.

Moving BANS to a folder is VERY quick and easy though if you prefer that method…

You just have to deal with all the 404/301 redirects!

  6. Paul on August 1st, 2008 10:02 pm

Thanks Mark, I’ve been using these wordpress templates for quite some time and I can’t wait to use them with the changes you made.

I also would like to move Bans to a folder on two of my sites. Could you explain in a post how to do it and how to creat the 404/301 redirects.

  7. Dean on August 2nd, 2008 1:11 pm

    Mark,

The sample site looks great. I’m trying to install it now but the file you have to download doesn’t include the very first item your instructions give to install…

    inc-main-menu.php

  8. Dean on August 2nd, 2008 1:34 pm

Can anyone help? There is no inc-main-menu.php file in the download zip file Mark linked to. That’s the first step in the instructions to install, but it’s missing. I’ve downloaded the file twice, and went to the templates page, and it’s not in any of the zip files.

  9. Mark on August 2nd, 2008 1:53 pm

    Dean -

The file is right inside the “Shop” folder.

    Mark

  10. Dean on August 2nd, 2008 1:56 pm

    Thanks for the quick reply,

    But your instructions say:

STEP 1 - Upload the Files to your Domain
    ******************************************************************************************

1 - The inc-main-menu.php file should be uploaded to the ROOT of your domain, in most cases, this is directly inside the public_html folder.

2 - The files included in the “shop” folder are to be uploaded to your BANS store directory.

    * inc-store-menu.php
This file goes directly into the root of your BANS STORE. If your store is installed in a /shop/ folder, (www.mydomain.com/shop/) this file should resolve immediately inside the store folder.
    —————————————-
There isn’t a inc-main-menu.php file. So use the inc-store-menu.php file instead for step one? If so you should change your instructions page to reflect the change.

  11. Michelle on August 2nd, 2008 11:17 pm

How do you move your BANS to a folder? Or should I wait until you release the ones that have the BANS in the root and the BLog in the folder?

  12. Tom on August 3rd, 2008 11:02 am

    Mark

Thanks for making this available. I am testing it out on a site and if it is what I need I will be making a paypal contribution to the College fund!

Also, thanks for expanding the conversation regarding BANS. Many others are thinking the same things but they are not communicating it like you are.

  13. Juan H on August 4th, 2008 10:13 am

I am trying to use the studipress templates in wp 2.6 and it says the css file is missing. how do i select the template in wp

  14. llola on August 4th, 2008 6:23 pm

I’m getting the same message as “Juan H” - “Style sheet is missing”.

I also am having an issue with steps 2 and 3. I can’t find the lines that I’m supposed to edit. Exactly where am I supposed to upload these changed files?

    Thanks!

  15. Mark on August 4th, 2008 6:29 pm

    @ Juan and Llola -

please post your site URL’s or if you prefer, use the contact link in the header above to send me an email directly.

In regard to finding the lines in steps 2 & 3, the lines that need to be changed are right at the top of the files.

The files need to be edited in either notepad, or directly on the server through your cPanel file manager.

    Mark

  16. llola on August 4th, 2008 7:00 pm

I sent you and email. Thanks!

  17. Alice on August 5th, 2008 2:39 pm

Is there a separate set of instructions for this theme, or do I use the onces from SimpleCSS?

  18. Mark on August 5th, 2008 2:43 pm

    @ Alice -

One of the first files inside the zip archive is named install.txt. It contains the link tot he installation walkthrough.

    Mark

  19. Alice on August 5th, 2008 5:13 pm

I got the same error as Juan and Llola - the style sheet is missing. When I look at the files I downloaded, the only thing in the theme folder for the blog is a sidebar.php file. Am I missing something??

  20. Alice on August 5th, 2008 5:17 pm

I also have this on the top of the Shop page:

Warning: file_get_contents(http://www.charmsandcharmbracelets.org/inc-bans-header.php) [function.file-get-contents]: failed to open stream: HTTP request failed! HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found in /home/greatest/public_html/charmsandcharmbracelets/shop/themes/BANS-StudioPress_Green/header.php on line 18

  21. Alice on August 6th, 2008 12:12 am

So is there a bug here, or did I so something wrong? I now have a totally non-functional site…

I don’t know what it is about this theme, but it seems harder to set up than the flex or SimpleCSS ones…

  22. Paul on August 6th, 2008 2:36 pm

This is what I did to set up a new site for Wordpress and BANS

    1. Set up the domain
    2. Use Fantastico and set up Wordpress
    3. Checked Wordpress to make sure it was working right.
    4. Wrote a first post
    5. Uploaded JTPratt’s list of plugins
    6. Activated the plugins as per his instructions.
    7. Checked Wordpress to make sure everything was right.
    8. Uploaded BANS to it’s own folder
    9. Made the SQL database for BANS and chmod the cont.php file as instructed in the BANS setup
    10. Activated BANS
    11. Chmod the cont.php file back to the normal setting
    12. Removed the install.php file in BANS
    13. Set my new security password in BANS
    14. Selected an ebay category number for the main store.
    15. Checked BANS
    16. Got StudioPress Themes and uploaded them to the themes folder of Wordpress.
    17. Activated the studiopress theme I wanted and checked Wordpress to make sure it was working right.
    18. Downloaded and extracted StudioPress for BANS. Opened the folder on my desktop.
    19. Put inc-bans-footer, inc-bans-sidebar, inc-bans-header in Root folder.
    20. Opened the shop folder and put inc-store-menu in the folder you put BANS into.
    21. Opened the themes folder and put the files in the BANS themes folder.
    22. Closed all the folders on my desktop.
    23. Opened the StudioPress for BANS folder again.
    24. Opened the wp-content folder and then opened the themes folder inside it.
    25. Downloaded the StudioPress folders to the Wordpress themes folder.
    26. Activated my choice of StudioPress themes.
    27. Opened the theme editor (design/theme editor/sidebar.php) and changed http://www.yourwebsite.com/shop to my domain and the folder BANS is in. Then saved it.
    28. Closed that all up and opened the BANS admin.
    29. Went to the Template Tab and clicked on the header
    30. Changed the $bans_url http://www.yourwebsite.com/shop to my domain and and the folder BANS is in.
    31. Changed the $blog_url http://www.yourwebsite.com to my domain.
    32. Checked the store.
    33. Checked the Blog
    34. Everything worked for me.

  23. John on August 11th, 2008 5:48 pm

Hey paul thanks. I was a bit worried about trying this out tomorrow or later tonight but this really helps. Wish the newbie luck!!! (thats me!)

  24. John on August 11th, 2008 5:50 pm

One more question! I have an site I want to try this out on. It is already set up (not making a cent yet). Should I erase the cmod and the whole file and start fresh? Or should I do different steps?

  25. John on August 11th, 2008 5:51 pm

Mark what do you charge for BANs sites that are already set up and running (fairly good)?

  26. Bill on August 13th, 2008 12:08 am

fyi….I tried to install this theme also. I’m getting the same error as a couple other folks above when I try to activate the theme from the WP admin panel. css file is missing.

  27. Mark on August 13th, 2008 12:13 am

    @ Bill -

You have to go and download the actual theme from the link above first. I have only included a few ADDITIONAL files, not the free theme itself.

    Thanks,

    Mark

  28. NoChance on August 18th, 2008 10:30 am

I had the same issues as several other people. Here is what I found. Please bare with me. I am typing this up by memory as I did it last night right before bed.

The instructions say to put the inc-bans-header.php in the store root. However, the variable to determine the path to that file is using the site root and not the bans root. I believe this is on Line 18. I just changed the variable to reflect the bans root instead of the site root.

The style sheet path is incorrect. If you use any of the colored themes, it should include _Color. In my case, it was StudioPress_Red and not StudioPress as defined in the header file. To me, that means if you use the default theme, it will be correct, but if you pick any of the 3 other themes, your path will be wrong.

Mark, I know you released this for free and I appreciate the work you put into it, but something is not right with your PHP. I run PHP as cgi for security purposes. I know this is not very common and could be why I am seeing this issue. I have my own dedicated, powerful server and I noticed that my site went to a crawl when I implemented this theme. I checked and it spawned and incredible number of PHP threads on my server for that sites specific user. I went back to the default theme and everything went back to normal. The same thing happened when I implemented the sidebar on the Wordpress part of the site. I’m curious if anyone else noticed this?

  29. Mark on August 18th, 2008 10:41 am

    @ NoChance -

In regard to the style reference in the header… it was missed int he original download, I had updated it on August 9th and again this morning, I jumped in to make sure the references were correct. You may have DL’d the original before Aug 9th… Sorry about that.

I HAVE noticed the theme running slow on occasion myself, and attributed that to the use of a very wide niche, thus MANY calls tot he MySql database for the bans menu. IE: The auto, or ebay motors category has like 900 subcategories, which slowed it down…

The ONLY call between the two separate application is the menu call, which is just straight BANS code for the menu.

I found that using a much narrowed niche, or even using CLOSED menu on the BANS side sped everything up substantially.

    Mark

  30. NoChance on August 19th, 2008 12:08 am

    Mark,

I grabbed the new files. That fixed the code issues.

I also narrowed the category like you suggested and that made a big difference.

    Thank you for suggesting that.

  31. Ross on August 21st, 2008 4:02 pm

    Mark,

Pardon me if this question has been answered in a previous post…

ebay has determined that the traffic generated from my epn account is significantly less engaged with the eBay site as compared to the standards set by other affiliates, therefore I need to convert my BANS sites to Pepperjam - No Problem.

However, I would rather use wordpress. Can any of your Bans/wordpress conversions be used with Pepperjam?

    Thanks,

    Ross

  32. Mark on August 21st, 2008 4:55 pm

    @ Ross -

Yes… BANS is till BANS and WordPress is itself as well. When you use the PJN version of BANS, its all the same. You are just sending your visitor through a different link before going to eBay.

Sorry to hear you were affected by this round of cuts today. Have you tried contacting them?

    Mark

  33. art on September 7th, 2008 8:55 am

    Hi;
I have the studio press installed on my blog and it works great. When I go to the store the bans template is broken up, all the categories and posts are at the bottom. How can I fix This?
Any ideas on what I have done wrong.
    blog.weiartgem.com
    Thanks
    Art

  34. Mark on September 7th, 2008 9:22 am

    @ Art -

It looks like you have the full path in the pathvars.php, twice.

In the file, check to be sure the links are not listed as: http://…. http:…

with 2 references to the http address.

    Mark

  35. art on September 7th, 2008 6:53 pm

    Hi Mark;
There is no pathvars.php and nothing calling this file?
The calls for the store and blog are in the header of the shop theme..
The other is in the sidebar.php in the blog themes to put in the $bansurl.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks
    art

  36. John on September 7th, 2008 10:31 pm

    Hi Mark,

I just loaded another Studiopress Bans site at the website above. Everything went well, however I noticed when I go to the Bans Store part, the heading over the ebay categories says “HVAC Store” How do I remove that title and add another one.

I noticed this also on your test site http://studiop.trybans.com/ I looked in all the coding, but could not find it. Other than that, all is well.

    Thanks Mark

    John

    Thanks
    John
