Build A Niche Store Empire - Cindy’s Site Performance

February 27, 2008

Niche Site 1 Chainsaw Deals (Chainsaw Deals Sitemap)

Date of first inbound link: 2/27/08

Costs : $33.00 total
$11.00 domain name (I don’t want my personal info out there!)
$22.00 outsourced articles

Earnings: $0.00

Notes: Submitted 6 pages to Kaboodle and 2 pages to Clipmarks

Timeline:

  • 2/21/08 - Domain purchased
  • 2/25/08 - Googlebot came a-callin’ (best I can figure is that setting up a Google Alert, per Rochelle’s recommendation, was the cause of this because I had done no link-building at that point)
  • 2/27/08 - unknown bot came to visit
  • 2/27/08 3:30pm - 1st in-bound link (Clipmarks) showing in cpanel and additional unknown bot has visited
  • 2/27/08 6:30 pm - 2nd in-bound link (Kaboodle) showing in cpanel and Google has come back

I got off to a late start with my first site. Mr Murphy Law and I went head-to-head on my first niche selection and Murphy won … so I had to start all over again. I think this is a better niche after all.

I had read about Clipmarks previously and how quick the results were. Sure enough, my first Clip showed a link in cpanel after only about 2 hours although I’m still not seeing any indexing of the site yet. After seeing the fast result, I clipmarked another page but no results from that although I now have a link from Kaboodle.

I have a pretty elaborate article marketing strategy I will be using to market my sites. Details will follow in a couple of weeks after I’ve had a chance to see some results.

Cindy - I don’t know if my husband’s love of ‘The Chainsaw Massacre’ is creeping into my conscience but the very first thought I had upon seeing your store’s header was that the red on the saw was blood…

  2. Rochelle on February 27th, 2008 10:13 pm

Cindy - Sorry, my real reason for leaving a comment was to ask what Clipmark is. What is it?

  3. Cindy on February 27th, 2008 10:35 pm

Rochelle! What a horrid thought! Of course, I know nothing about chainsaws and wading through all the massacre keywords got old.

Actually, that was a perfectly normal picture of a guy holding a chainsaw that I used a close-up cropping of … never even thinking that that might look like blood. LOL! It’s only a temporary header though … until Mark gets into the template mods and I hopefully learn more about being creative with the header space.

As for http://clipmarks.com, it’s one of those Web 2.0/social bookmarking things. After installing the plug-in and selecting the text I wanted to clipmark, I chose the “save clip” option and clipmarked it to my account there although you can clipmark things to a blog or even into an email. It’s real easy to do so I think I’ll be doing it for each new site. Whether there is any point in clipmarking more than one page, someone else would need to answer that as I still don’t quite understand the social bookmarking thing.

I don’t think my next site will have blood in the header and I’ll try to make sure it doesn’t make you think of something else (a little suspense for you there!)

What MOD did you use to get the product display the way you have it? Thanks!

  5. Rochelle on February 28th, 2008 7:05 pm

Cindy - Sorry. It’s just the way my mind works sometimes. I started laughing when I saw your graphic because of the thought of blood and I couldn’t resist sharing. I can’t wait to see your next niche store. When you see mine you may understand a bit more about why my mind went where it did… : )

Hank - I don’t think Cindy used a mod. You have three options for displaying auction results with BANS (five with v3). I believe she is using option 2 (?).

If you have no idea what I’m talking about (and I was unaware of these options until a few weeks ago) go to your site’s Admin and click on ‘Setup.’ Look for ‘Product Layout’ and play around with the different choices, checking your store after each selection, until you find one you like best. If I’m wrong, though, and Cindy is using a mod I’m sure she’ll clarify.

    Hank,

Rochelle is correct. I didn’t use any type of mod on the listing displays, just used Product Layout 2 in the Admin panel. I did, however, take the colors out of the background of the listings and used Rochelle’s instructions to modify my css (terrific instructions, BTW!!)

    Rochelle,

If we were just playing and I didn’t create this site with the intention of making money with it, I would create a new header and use the font Hank has in his header (which looks great, Hank). Using the color red with that drippy font, LOL … maybe you/your husband should make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre site!

Re: maybe you/your husband should make a Texas Chainsaw Massacre site!

Oh, no! Much too gruesome for my taste. I gave up horror movies after having the worst nightmare of my life shortly after watching ‘28 Days Later.’ I do, however, still read Stephen King (love his stuff!).

Hank - What a great niche idea! I hope you do well with it. I don’t know why but I am hesitant to get into high-priced products. I need to get over that.

  8. Hank on February 28th, 2008 7:56 pm

Duh…. never even tried to change that option. I thought it would give a “2-wide” column listing. Thanks!

The only reason I thought of that niche as I’ve been thinking of getting one when I redo my bathroom. Started the site the 21st, was googled 2 days later, getting about 40 visits per day now (not counting refers from here) and got my first sale yesterday. Also got a couple of AdSense click $$$.

I went with a higher priced submission service with this site that does 100 search engines, 150 socal sites and 200 article submissions. Not sure I would do that with others but wanted to see how much of a difference it would make.

Also started a blog with my BANS activity and am syndicating it with Feedburner. Also using Kaboodle. We’ll see what happens.

Please could someone explain google alerts? Just gone to google, and it looks as if it works from the searcher’s perspective, rather than the web publisher’s…. so how can it help?

  10. Cindy on February 29th, 2008 6:51 pm

    Lyn,

Google Alerts allow you to track activity on any subject, website, etc. So by setting up google alerts for your sites, you will be notified by Google whenever they visit your site or they find a link to your site … at least that is my understanding of it.

They don’t “do” anything for your site … it just makes tracking activity easier for you.

    Hey y’all,

Great looking sites, all of you! I’m not sure how I missed it, but where are Rochelle’s instructions on how to make the solid background for the products. Personally I like that much better than the changing blocks of color on the standard product display.

    Thanks in advance.

    Honey,

    Try this URL - http://www.nichestorestrategies.com/colors-for-auction-results/

Rochelle has some GREAT instructions on making almost any change you could possibly want to make to your site .. and some I would never have thought of.

They do require messing around with html or css and all sorts of things so some people may not feel comfortable making the changes. But her instructions are by far the most comprehensive I have EVER seen and they take you step by step through everything. If you’ve ever wanted to mess around with this type of stuff (and have no training .. like me), her instructions will get you there. And then you’ll wonder why you were so scared to make any changes. And much of what she shows is also transferable to non-BANS sites so that makes it all the more useful.

Since I like the white-on-white for my auction listings on all my sites, I actually included these changes in what Mark refers to as the “raw” bans folder that I use to load all my sites so I don’t have to make this change with every site. Of course, anyone who wants each site to be unique in color, etc., wouldn’t want to do this.

    HTH.

Thanks so much Cindy! I’ll be using this info for the sites I’m currently putting up.

I’m not sure which I love more, the BANS software itself or the fabulous folks that use it!

    Thanks again for your help!

    Honey
