Build a Niche Store Upgrade from 2.0 to BANS 3.0

Hi Everyone -

I actually made this short video last night in reference to changing a BANS 2.0 to the newly released BANS 3.0. During the editing process, I got a headache and had to walk away from it for awhile! :-)

Let me first say that if you are happy with your BANS 2.0 stores, you DON’T HAVE TO CHANGE! The 3.0 upgrade is very welcome, but I am only going to use the upgrade on very few older stores, and use it on EVERY NEW store from here forward.

This video walks through the upgrade as well as making sure you take the correct measure to redirect your old sitemap file to the new one, using a 301 permanent redirect (Very Important if you have got inbound links to the old sitemap)

    Mark,

Now I understand what you commented on earlier. I had been looking at my beta stores, which didn’t have the new sitemap.

Is there any reason why I shouldn’t simply hide the new sitemap and continue to use the one created from your mod on updated stores?

Yes, the new sitemap does not use the same code, thus it wont work correctly. Did you notice all the cuts and jumps in the video? I actually recorded that as I was walking through it myself… had to cut about 10 minutes of “Oh-Hecks” out of it! :-)

    Hi guys!

Ok, just to clarify….cuz I’m sure I’m probably not the only one wondering this…But, if you don’t want to upgrade your existing stores to 3.0, you don’t have to?

For instance, I have 5 BANS 2.0 stores up and running…if I go 3.0 from here on out, the older stores won’t be effected?

    (Rochelle…Clothes For Cleavage??? ;) Nice!)

    Eric,

You’re absolutely correct. You do NOT have to upgrade on existing sites. You could even continue creating new sites using v2.0 but I’m not sure why anyone would.

Just start using v3.0 from now on and you’ll be fine. There are some built-in time-savers (like the sitemap, the auto-populating meta tags, etc) that are to die for!

That’s good news! I think I’ll leave my 2.0 sites alone.

…so as long as I overwrite my current, 2.0 admin, cont etc folders with the 3.0 stuff…I’ll be good to go from now on?

Eric – I’m working on my clothes for cleavage site as you read this! Should be a fun one to create…

Seems like upgrading is always a mess – just from what others say. I haven’t upgraded a store yet – I always start fresh. My opinion, it is pretty simple to put a store up.

I also wait a few months once an update is published before I start developing a site with the new script. However, I’ve been eager to use this one since you can target a geographic area.

Can I ask everyone’s opinion (who’s had a chance to try out BANS 3.0 so far) – is it worth doing category research anymore? With the new admin setup I’ve been experimenting with doing lots of wordtracker research and then just building store pages with category 2 and a specific search term. For example, my new 3.0 store is http://www.doctorwhoauctions.com – I did comprehensive research on longtail keyword phrases, checked that those phrases picked up relevant product on eBay and then have been building store pages that way.

I’d appreciate any comments or suggestions or feedback on this approach.

    Cheers!

    Great Question!

Realistically, even in BANS 2.0, you didnt have to go through the category selection process. You could just choose category 0 and use a search term to find what you wanted. :-)

I think it is still a good practice however… since you can import several categories at once versus having to build an entire store from the ground up.

Thanks, Mark – yeah, I’m one of those totally anal data-freaks who actually enjoys going through an excel spreadsheet with a highlighter then grouping together keywords for different areas of a website. We’ll see how it goes, but I’m enjoying doing it this way because you can more easily capture all the items that people post in random places…..each to his own!

    Marilla,

I’ve done the exact same thing you’re describing for most of my stores. Since then, I’ve tried it “Marks way” by importing the categories and changing them. It really does a great job with some site, but not with others. So I guess it’s just a preference…but finding high KEI keywords and building categories out of them is a great way to go!

    Mark,

I’m upgrading a V2 store to V3, was a little disappointed to see that the trackback and page title mod wasn’t included in V3. Can we use your trackback & page title MODs on Version 3?

    Hi Everyone

I am new to BANS and know next to nothing about computers. However, I found this fantastic forum and Mark’s course a couple of weeks ago and am rushing excitedly to catch up with you all. I cannot believe the generosity of everyone on this forum, and particularly Mark in sharing his knowledge and skill with us all. I am so grateful for this opportunity to learn something new and hopefully to make a little money. Perhaps I’ll be able to give up the day job one day soon!!!

With Mark’s help and the help of everyone else on this forum, I have managed to build a basic v3 store. However, I notice that my Home Page does not show on the site map. Is this right? I have created a test content page and this does show on the site map. Otherwise, everything seems to be working.

This is the same information Mark explains in the video above but written in steps.

OK So I’m trying this today. If I undersatnd right the redirect code that we add go’s at the top of the header.php.
I’m having a hard time seeing just exactly whats going on in the video. Is there anyway to make the video full screen?
    Thanks

    @ Richard -

Check your store /cont/cont.php file to be sure it is configured for your database.

    That looks like the issue.
