WordPress Admin won’t Load? Check the aLinks Plugin
July 21, 2008 | 5 Comments
Amazing what just a few minutes of code searching can do when you know where to look! In a nutshell, the website of the aLinks developer, www.headzoo.com, is down. (as of the time of this post)
When your site admin loads, it checks to see which of your plugins are up to date and shows messages in your browser of those which may need to be updated. Well, if the host website is down, your site admin will not get through the entire load process and your admin pages will never load.
If you absolutely MUST get into your site admin NOW, just rename your aLinks plugin folder for the time being. After the headzoo site comes back up, you can reverse the name change and your aLinks will work fine again.
Open your cPanel and go to file manager. Navigate to your wp-content > plugins > alinks folder. Click on top of the folder and choose “rename” from the right side menu and supply a temporary name for the folder. I usually use the original folder name followed by a period and a new name. For example:
Original name: alinks
Temporary rename: alinks.temp
This way, when you jump back in to return the name to the original in 2 days, you don’t have to worry about remembering the original name, its right there!

Can aLinks Cause Site Issues? Obviously!
July 21, 2008 | Leave a Comment
First - Thanks to everyone for their patience in my response time over the past several days! We had several fun days at the beach and got home late Sunday night… I am still catching up on email, so if I have not replied to yours yet, it will be answered soon.
My intent today, was to talk about a little contest I am getting ready to start here on the site, but lo and behold, I could not login to my WordPress admin ALL DAY! I mean, I had depleted every known resource of my own and finally gave way to getting in touch with Hostgator tech support to see if they had a clue. If you have ever had a problem and spent 6 hours trying to resolve it, save yourself the effort next time and just shoot support an email. After all my efforts, they replied back within 30 minutes and told me that something happened to my aLinks installation and it was hosing my site admin!
The odd part, is that ONLY the site admin was jacked up! The rest of the site was fine… which led me on quite a wild chase looking for hacked files, corrupt htaccess files etc. After 6 hours of hair pulling, HG support found the issue in no time! They moved my wp-content/plugins/alinks/ folder to a different area for me to jump in and take a look at and the admin is fine!
Now I am off to find out WHY the issue came about!
More to come…

Bug List and Updates to SimpleCSS Template for BANS and WordPress
July 16, 2008 | 5 Comments
I wanted to produce a post where I can keep track of all bugs you may experience with the SimpleCSS BANS Template for WordPress. If you find a bug, please post a comment to the bottom of this post, or use the contact form to send it to me directly.
After bugs are corrected, the newest set of files is uploaded to the download manager. You should be able to revisit the download link that was sent to you via email, and download the latest version. If you do not have the original email, use the contact form above to shoot me over an email and I will send you the update.
Please note that not all reports are added until I have verified there is an actual bug in the template system.
Last Updated: 07/16/2008
Reported Bugs
Stray #1 posting to the left of the comment count. Fixed: 07/15/08
Simple CSS Template Bug Fix 1 :: Video of the Fix in Action (4:48 Long)
Sidebar #1 and #2 not working correctly on the blog side of the site. Fixed: 07/16/08
1 - Open your wp-content/themes/simplecss/sidebar.php file in the editor of your choice. (cPanel editor works fine) Find the following code, starting at line #5
<?php if ( function_exists(’dynamic_sidebar’) && dynamic_sidebar(5) ) : else : ?>
<?php endif; ?>
</div>
<div id=”sidebarright”>
<?php if ( function_exists(’dynamic_sidebar’) && dynamic_sidebar(1) ) : else : ?>
The 5 needs to be a 1 and the 1 needs to be a 2, or after it is updated:
<?php if ( function_exists(’dynamic_sidebar’) && dynamic_sidebar(1) ) : else : ?>
<?php endif; ?>
</div>
<div id=”sidebarright”>
<?php if ( function_exists(’dynamic_sidebar’) && dynamic_sidebar(2) ) : else : ?>
Save your work, upload to server if you changed on local system. Done.
If you downloaded the SimpleCSS Template after 8PM ET, 07/16/08, it is already completed. Also remember, you have 2 versions of the template included in your download. Make sure you update both packages, or simply download the latest version for all fixes to be completed.

Using the ALinks Plugin on your Blog and Niche Site
July 16, 2008 | 10 Comments
Quick video post today on how to use the aLinks plugin to minimize the amount of time it takes in writing posts!
Links in today’s video:

- aLinks Plugin Homepage
I should also mention that while I have not done so myself, I have read that aLinks can be used with your eBay partner ID! :-)
One other notable I forgot to mention… When preparing phrases for aLinks, try to stick with long tail phrases. It will avoid future issues with multiple links in a phrase you meant to be a single. For example: If you chose to use aLinks on a term like “sofa store”, you would be limited on using it in the future… every time you wanted to create a link to a longer tail phrase like: “Luxury Sectional Sofa Store”, aLinks would break your link into 2 links! One for luxury sectional, and then a second for your other phrase, sofa store. Rule of thumb… use on long tails only!

Can you feel the Ground Shaking - Its a GoogleQuake!
July 15, 2008 | 5 Comments
I don’t know about the rest of you, but lately, Google has gotten quite a bit of my own attention! Whether it’s from several of my own BANS sites being delisted last month, the dispute over Privacy, Street View, or several other recent Google happenings… they are getting alot of attention!
The one thing that has me reading more than ever though, is the way Google serp’s have been all over the place! If you read the BANS forum, ePN Forum, Webmaster Forums, DigitalPoint, or just about ANYWHERE people talk about their websites, one of the most common threads lately… My Site(s) has Dropped in the Google Rankings!
Could it spell a Florida-Like update coming very soon?
… to be continued for sure!
