Check Your Hard Drive!

A great place to find ideas for a BANS site may be sitting right under your nose … on your hard drive.

One thing that I’ve done recently is go through the unbelievable amount of PLR articles that I’ve accumulated over the past couple of years. While most of these were created for Adsense-type sites and so are geared towards informational niches, many of them are product-related and very good idea generators for a store. If any of the PLR articles are worth using (some are, many are not), then I can use them as the basis for my content.

Originally I just focused on the product-related niches, but after seeing the diabetes site that Len mentioned I’m going to have to go back through my PLR articles and see what I might have disregarded as non-BANS potentials, thinking they were just good for Adsense.

Some other ways I come up with ideas is just looking at other people’s sites as I’m surfing. Sometimes it’s another BANS site and I look at what they’re promoting and think about how I could do it better. Usually it is a non-BANS site and I do a quick check of eBay to see if it looks feasible. (Now if I could just get organized in where I keep all my ideas because I have countless text files scattered about on my hard drive that have a few ideas each!)

I have come across niches that are not viable for a BANS store (not enough items being sold) but the majority of ideas you can think of will work. You just have to train your mind to be in BANS mode all the time! And when you have a long list to choose from, you can be more selective in the niches you build stores for.

When I first saw this post… I swear, I thought someone had jacked up the wordpress install!! LOL

Great post – a Niche under your Nose!

I have actually stumbled onto notepad .txt files where I didnt have a pen handy and saved them to my all important, “Junk” folder on a spare drive in the system. About once a year (OK, every 2 years) I go through and try to read all the untitled.txt, untitled1.txt files I have orphaned!

    Some of it is hilarious!

    Good idea Cindy!!

One of the most important things that i realized was most important was having a niche. You drill down and drill down till you find it.

I chose Diabetes as the start of my Niche searching, as i am a type 2 diabetic. I am now on my quest to finding “the Niche”. I have been checking different keywords, and going to ebay to see if anything I have found will work. I take only natural products for diabetes so for example I am searching for natural products for diabetes, natural weightloss for diabetes etc. It is this blog and this site, which is getting me thinking and doing.

    Mark,

Sorry, didn’t mean to give you a coronary!

Many times I”ll come across a good niche that is actually quite seasonal or at least somewhat seasonal (sort of like your grill site). Can you give some insight as to how far in advance we should be setting up a seasonal site in order to have it primed and ready for its peak season?

I’m not looking for an answer right now … just would like to see this aspect covered sometime during the series.

    Thanks.

    Cindy,

I feel that we need to carefully consider what is seasonal. Many people will look to buy something off season to get a better deal. Also, since I live in Denver and it is very cold and snowy this time of year I may not be thinking about a grill. If I lived in Tucson , I might be searching for one. I suppose it might be hard to get hits on Halloween candy right now though.

    BANS on!

    Hey Curt,

I totally agree. That’s why I referred to the grills as “somewhat seasonal” meaning that while people might be shopping for them all year long, there would definitely be a spike during certain months.

Using your own example of the Halloween candy, while someone might want to shop off-season to get a good deal, what is the likelihood anybody would be selling it? And taking snow as an example, 6 months from now no one, I don’t think, will have snow so there would likely be few snow-related items for sale.

Obviously you can build any site any time you want and it will be there ready for the next season when it is popular. I was just trying to figure out when might be the latest/best time to build seasonal sites in order to get the most benefit the fastest. So instead of building a Halloween candy site in November when the season has just ended, why not spend that time focusing on spring items? Then come summer, it would be wise to take the time to build out that Halloween candy store. That’s what I was trying to get a fix on.

Just trying to be sure Mark has plenty to discuss … as if he isn’t already probably thinking he’ll need to extend this 12 weeks to 15 weeks just to cover all the questions people have! HA!

Cindy – Funny you mentioned PLRs as possible niche site ideas. I was looking at that very thing on my computer yesterday. For those who don’t know, PLRs are Private Label Rights articles (aka PLR). PLR articles are ones that you can purchase and then do anything you want with them. You can claim them as your own, rewrite them, sell them, give them away, or use them on your own site.

The benefit of finding good PLR articles is to add good content to your own site to help bring in people from search engines. Good PLR articles are rich in keywords.

And, about seasonal sites, one of the sites I will be developing for this series is a seasonal site. I’ve been wondering how far in advance it should be developed but hadn’t thought to ask. Good question!

    Rochelle,

I’ve also wondered that about seasonal sites…but with that being said, I’ll always look for a niche that is non-seasonal before I consider a seasonal one. I only have 3 sites up right now, and I feel that laying a good foundation of income is more important at this stage, than creating a “once-a-year” site.

…although, I know some seasonal/holiday sites can be very lucrative!
