Day 2 – Building a Website with WordPress

On Day 1 of launching our new WordPress website, we made sure we had at least 10 posts in the queue and got our first inbound link. Today, on Day 2 of the site being live… we first want to check if the link did any good at all, and of course, add some more content!

Identifying the Spider Visits

nofolllow.jpg

As you can see from my cPanel this morning – Spider activity is in full gear! The 3 main spiders I want to index the site are:

  1. Googlebot
  2. Yahoo Slurp
  3. MSNBot

There are several references to unknown spiders in the report as well, these are keyword spy, domain spiders, and others that really have no impact on search engines. I will monitor these for the amount bandwidth they use and if they get too busy, I may start blocking their IP’s in the blacklist within cPanel.

If I saw no activity in this area today, its really no reason to panic as the site is still very new… but I would put a bit of extra effort into social bookmarking, to give the site more exposure to the web. As of this post, I have found 48 indexed page in G, but none in Y or MSN.

Creating a New Content Post

You will soon find that the new post is a trend that will continue almost EVERY SINGLE DAY! Monday through Friday, I will be adding a new post every day! Yesterday afternoon, I added a post about DIY Home Insulation for the colder season coming up… After the post was live on the site, I visited my bookmarking utility and made sure there it was listed in my online bookmarks.

No Need to Rush!

One other thing you will find about this 30 day series… I am NOT rushing anything! I am not going to post 20 new articles every day… and I am not going to go crazy finding links or monetizing this new website. The one thing every search likes to see is slow and steady growth in a new website. As I write this post every day, you may find there are some days I do nothing but write a post and bookmark it. Don’t get yourself in a hurry on your new site – take your time and do it right!

What other things do you do in the first week of a site launch?

I may be a bit dumb here but what do you mean by -I do nothing but write a post and bookmark it. What or where do you bookmark it-I should know what you mean-do you mean join up with the rss feed of your own blog?Sorry to ask such a simple but stupid question

    Hi John,

Take a quick at the day one post, Mark mentions an excellent service called Overwire. Once you have signed up free, you can download the wordpress plugin which is a bookmarklet, upload to your wordpress plugins and start book marking your sites. The instructions on the site are very easy to follow.

    Hey Mark,

Can we submit our post by clicking on “All-in-one Bookmarking Button” under our own post and submitting the same from SocialMarker.com when it takes us there?

    Or should we not?

GB – You are fine bookmarking your own post, that is the purpose of the service.

Bookmarking it on multiple avenues that add to the same account is not needed though, you will be charged with spamming! :-)
