Days 10 & 11 – Rewarding your Visitors with Authority Content!

One of the best ways to get others reading and linking to your new site, is to shift a bit of focus on OTHER sites! That’s right… provide your readers with links to other websites that will also help them achieve the task, which led them to you!Today, as I focus on adding another post to my new website, I am going to make it a point to link out to several other resources that may help the readers.

If you have been following this first 30 days of a website launch series at all, you may have noticed, I try to provide not only the tip or action of that day, but also the reasons WHY you want to do these things! Today is no different…

Why Linking to Other Websites Helps your own Page

As I have been following along a PPC Course for the past 3 weeks, (More on that later) the one thing I learned real fast, is that your landing pages need to have a few key elements in order to avoid Google flagging your pages and jacking the CPC up! They call it a quality score… and while it used for a completely different purpose, it does speak volumes on page quality and how we write our own content to take advantage of the suggestions.

As much as we all like to think OUR page is “The Authority” on the topic we wrote about, the search engines have millions of pages of data already indexed that may be better. By linking to those already authoritative pages, you are telling the search engines…

Hey, this is what my page is about, and look… I even linked to those with authority on the subject to help my own visitors get more information!

As your own page is spidered by search engines, it is not only indexed for the relevant content, but it is also much easier for a spider to know what your page is about, simply by the posts you relate to!

Who Should you Link To?

Since you know you want to provide your VISITORS with places of authority to learn more, you want to link to those pages the engines already consider to be a great resource! One of the biggest mistakes made when linking out, is to link to ONLY the main page of a site… Don’t do it! Find the post or web article that is on your subject and link to it directly.

Your search for quality information should include at least the following:

  1. Wikipedia
  2. Google Knol
  3. Google
  4. Yahoo
  5. MSN or Live (Live looks better every time I visit)
  6. Technorati
  7. Digg
  8. Google Blog Search

In addition to authority posts or articles, you should not neglect the new posts you can find in your Google blog search! Why? First, if their content is highly relevant and written well, you owe it to your own readers to share it! Second, those webmasters are very likely to link back to you much quicker than older page and return the link love back!

wow, Mark lots of good insight to digest. I’ve been posting on other relevant sites but really just for readers, not thinking about the link love. I also didn’t know about the deep linking.

I had a problem with linking out for quite a while because I thought I wanted to keep my visitors.

I’ve changed my thinking now because I want to be the authority site and the easiest way to do that is to have all the links my visitors need right at their fingertips. I want them to come to my site first and then use my help to get the right information.

I wrote a few Knols in August, linked to the knols and since then I have been getting regular visitors from there.

Yes, It is important to link exactly to the information (page) instead of the main page on outbound links. Don’t make your visitors search for something on another site.

At movingsnow.com I link out 4 pr 0 sites, 1 pr 3, 2 pr6 and a pr 7. It seems to help get my keywords higher in Google search. That may not actually be the case, but it feels like it helps.

    @ Paul -

That is exactly right!! If you are telling the search engines that you think your page should be an authority on that specific topic, it only makes sense to give the visitors more authority to read about!!

    Good practice!
