Dealing with 404 Errors after Moving BANS off the Domain Root

404.jpgSince many of us have decided that its best to get our Build a Niche Store sites off the root of the domain, we MUST deal with the pages that were already indexed in search engines!

The Problem

Since you have pages indexed already, search engines and wherever else you may have linked are going to send visitors to those pages which are no longer there. This is known as the dreaded 404 – Page not Found! These pages are VERY important to us though and we have to do something to let everyone know it has moved.

The Answer

A great WordPress Redirection plugin by Urban Giraffe!

Redirection is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old website, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

Aside from handling your 404′s, this plugin has several other great uses for managing affiliate banner links on your site as well! For now however, I am only worried about the BANS pages we moved into their location.

    Mark,
I’ve updated this plugin to 2.6 and unfortunately it looks totally different from the version you’re using. I’ll have to play with it tonight a see if I can figure it out.

Thanks for the info, I had the plugin but have not put it to use until now.

    Mark,

I am following your 12 wk course for the BANS and have received the 404 Error when I tried to load my second store. I don’t think I moved anything off of the domain root, at least not intentionally, but I found this post and it looks like the best place to ask for help.

    Here’s what’s happened, so far:

    - First BANS site up and running, adding inbound links, able to view all pages – no problems.

    - Created Raw BANS file
    - Installed BANS into second store
    - Reeceived error messages when tried to view store (corrected by HostGator – apparently assigned incorrect user to newly created My SQL database).
    - Before issue was resolved by HostGator, I deleted my BANS addon domain folder and reloaded it from the RAW BANS folder (thought I might be missing a file)
    - Now, when I go into my second store’s Admin page, I have two problems:

1 – If I try to View Store, I get the Installation steps again, which when completed, gives me a very long page of code. and

2 – If I try to view any of my Store Pages (they still appear from my original install) I get the 404 error, and the pages cannot be displayed.

Obviously I’ve done something wrong, but cannot figure out what.

Do I need to delete the SQL Database I set up for the second store and create a new one? or am I looking in the wrong direction?

If this is in the wrong post, or is too cumbersome to discuss online, please contact me via email. I have several ideas for additional BANS sites and am frustrated having to resolve this before I can continue moving forward.

    Thanks in advance – Mark
