Determine How You Will Approach The Market

Although this first article about building a review site blueprint is going to be the least informative, it is going to shape everything you do from this point forward! Determining how you will approach your new site sounds simple, but this is likely the biggest area that confuses many. There are two Main Types of Product Review Niche Sites that you will face, [Brand Driven] and [Type or Style Driven].

Understanding the BEST way for you to approach your chosen niche will determine the way you search for source products, and the overall range of products you build your website around. In addition to these main types, there are also [Combination] niche sites, which tend to be much larger in size, and include detailed categories for both [Brands] and [Types] pf products.

While it is rare, you will also find that some niche markets will ONLY fit into the “Type” flavor, due to the limited number of, or no [Brand Specific] products in the market!

In my own opinion, Brand Driven sites are easier to build, but pose the hurdle of competing directly against the brand itself, thus making it a bit more challenging to find success in the early months. I find Style or a Combination of Style and Brand, the easiest to build and maintain, as well as holding the highest resale value due to the generic nature of the domain you ultimately purchase.

Will You Build A “Brand” Driven Site?

Brand Driven Niche Websites are those which will focus on several [Brands] as the Primary Way of Categorizing the Products on the website.

Organized Primarily with Brands of Products – Typical BRAND Driven Examples Include:

  • Golf Clubs – Ping, Taylormade, Nike, etc
  • Baby Strollers – Graco, Evenflo, Kolcraft, etc
  • Televisions – Samsung, Phillips, Toshiba, etc

Characteristics of Brand Driven Websites

  • Primary Content is Specific Product Reviews
  • Secondary Content focused on Broad Buying Guides
  • Easy to Plan and Build
  • Directly Competing with Brand Names

Will You Build A “Type” Driven Site?

Type or Style Niche Websites are those that aren’t Primarily Distinguished by brand names, but instead are more focused on a [Type or Style] Variation as the Primary Method of Displaying Products on the website.

Organized Primarily with Types or Styles of Products – Typical Examples Include:

  • Golf Clubs – Drivers, Irons, Putters, etc
  • Baby Strollers -Convertible, Twin, Jogging, etc
  • Televisions – Flat Panel, LCD, Rear Projection, etc
  • Coin Collecting – Precious Metals, Years, Mint, Strikings, etc

Characteristics of Type or Style Driven Websites

  • Primary Content Specific Buying Guides
  • Secondary Content focused on Product Reviews
  • Easy to Plan and Build
  • Little to No Direct Competion from Brand Names
  • Higher Resale Value

Building A “Combination” Niche Site?

A Combination Niche Website, focuses on both [Brand] AND [Type or Styles] as the Chosen Way to Display your Products. These types of site provide the most flexibility, since you can organize your products into both brand name categories, as well as type or style of product categories, but they also tend to be MUCH LARGER websites to build and manage.

Organized Equally with Brands and Types of Products, Typical Examples Include:

  • Golf Clubs – Ping Drivers, Ping Irons, Ping Putters, etc
  • Women’s Jeans – Levi’s Skinny Jeans, Boot Cut Jean, Size 6 Jeans, etc
  • Used Cars – Chevy Nova, Pickup Trucks, Sports Cars, etc

Characteristics of Combination Websites

  • Primary Content BOTH Reviews and Guides
  • Wide Range of Content Generation Ideas (Non-Niche)
  • Large Amount of Browser Type Traffic
  • Sites NEVER Stop Growing
  • Higher Resale Value
  • Ability to Shift Focus Much Easier if you Find a Successful Trend

Love your writing style. And appreciate the information you’re sharing with us. I find it very helpful.

I’ve made three phpBay sites…two are dogs because I probably didn’t research the market correctly. I’m really hoping to learn something valuable here that I can use to correct my deficits.

    Thanks again,
    Olivia
