Do You Promote Amazon? If So, Clearly Tell Your Visitors!

In a somewhat non-news event, research by Millward Brown reveals Amazon was found to be the #1 TRUSTED brand in the USA!For someone like myself who is building a small network of very optimized review sites with ReviewAzon, that is GREAT news, and means that those “Buy it On Amazon” links I am plastering around my sites are not going to deter visitors, but reinforce their confidence in what is being offered!

The Not so Good News for eBay

I hate to keep harping on how bad eBay has been hurting lately, but another quick peek at the Compete Amazon versus eBay comparison, shows that eBay took a huge drop in traffic in its year over year and month over month metrics, while Amazon continues to rise!

The very few residual links I still have pushing traffic to eBay are doing what they are supposed to do I guess… but they are nothing compared to MANY thousands of visitors affiliates have turned to other programs like Amazon with. At this same time last year, I added several new sites to my arsenal… this year, almost everything has been monetized with Amazon and the ReviewAzon plugin!

Knowing that Amazon is SUCH a trusted vendor – that’s just icing on the cake! :-)

I have just bought ReviewAZON after trying to nurse my ePN sites through hard times and am loving it already. I have also read some of your posts on the forum too Mark!

Question: Terapeak – still valid for sales data now that ePN/eBay seems to be going down the pan?
Should we just be pushing the Amazon Bestsellers instead or listing as many products as we can, hoping that some will stick?

@Tao – Glad you like it Tao – I have seen “hundreds” of sites that are using Rzon “out of the box” and are doing GREAT in search rankings, which surprized me!

Re – TeraPeak – I still use it for sales metrics for sure! Its really one of the only sales metric reporting tools we have on the web and although not perfect, I figure if people are buying $xxx worth of a product on eBay, they are likely doing the same elsewhere.

    Hey Mark!

Great to hear you are having success with Amazon.

My primary concern is just the face that their affiliate commissions are so low… 4%?! I know that you can get it higher by selling a high volume… But assuming that the normal niche site builder will not reach that goal quickly… 4% of sales is tough going if you are trying to build a stable income.

Have you found that you are earning worthwhile money with Amazon? Or is it an uphill battle against the crappy commission rates?

This is great news, Mark. I just purchased ReviewAZON this evening and planning on converting my ebay sites to the Amazon program instead. :)

I’ve sent a 1000 clicks to Amazon and made about $2.50. This is my first month on it and it’s disappointing. I was trying to filter out some crappy eBay clicks so my EPC would go up.

I converted a few BANS sites to WordPress with WP-Robot and PHPBay and it’s helping traffic some but the Amazon $$ are crap. Conversion rate is 0.29%.

    Any tips are appreciated.

@Mark S – Crappy ebay clicks are going to be crappy Amazon clicks too. If they’re not buyers then they’re not buyers.

It’s hard to give you any advice without you being way more specific but niche selection is usually the first part and then what keywords you target are the 2nd.

    Mark,

I’ve been promoting Amazon products for a few months now, and LOVE them as an affiliate site! Their inventory is almost as vast as eBay’s, but DOES have the trust factor (this is even true for myself – I’ll shop at Amazon before going to most other places online).

Not only is it a good idea to add Amazon graphics, but it is also required (or, in lieu of the graphics, it needs to be specific wording). So, absolutely do add Amazon images!

Brad is working on the next version of ReviewAZON, and from discussions on his forum, it seems certain that we’ll be able to display Amazon products in columns the same as with PhpBay and BANS (forget BANS, though). I can’t wait.

I think Wade may be working on the same thing for PhpZon.

    Hey Mark,

I think over the last six months or so, we have been on a similar timeline in regards swapping out from ePN to Amazon and other alternatives. I am glad to have 100% turned my back on ebay as business is booming. Brad has put out a top notch product in ReviewAzon and, used correctly, it has proven to be a real money spinner.

I am currently also testing an amazon astore script which takes the astore out of the frame, allowing to build up indexed pages and quickly put a ‘store’ page into any site. So far so good with that. I will be writing a review if you are interested. Maybe you could take it on as a guest post?!

Keep up the good work mate. This remains on of my top 5 must read sites!

    Cheers,

    Neal

Good point Bill. I have a few sites that send a lot of clicks to eBay but don’t create sales. The sites are niche specific and some even have BUY or SALES in the domain name.

I haven’t embedded any Amazon graphics but will ASAP.

If you haven’t yet, look at WP-Robot. It can autopost stuff from Article sites, Yahoo Answers, Youtube, eBay and Amazon.

@potentmix – The next version of ReviewAZON does sound good. Nice to work with a platform that gets developed eh!

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

GREAT Point Rochelle – the Amazon notice is required on ANY site that promoted Amazon products and reviews.

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

@Neal – Be glad yo have you guest post it up Neal!

I have an Amazon store script somewhere also… It wasn’t store-stacker, but something else. Once I remember what it was, I will post it up as well!

Ebay and EPN sucks like a Hoover. The suits began destroying Epay in 2000 and it has been all downhill since. Insider short selling up the wazoo.

If you are still a rat on that ship I’d suggest opening your eyes.

@Tyler – All your comments were relegated to a spam folder Tyler.

You really stay at the 4% range only for the first few sales, you get to 6% within 7 sales, and up to 8.5% as it grows larger.

Also – if you promote shoes or handbags – you can get into the endless prpgram, which pays 15% referral fees.

Serious – you can do VERY GOOD with it! You have to send BUYERS, not shoppers. :-)

    Mark,

Colorado has just enacted a tax on internet sales, and as a result, Amazon is dropping their affiliates that live their. At this time, it’s easier for them to drop the state(s) than to revise their payout program.

What if I live there (or another state that has been wacked by this situation) and have sites that promote products on Amazon?

If I already have the sites optimized and have traffic, which affiliate program(s) would you suggest?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

@Steve – I heard all about the Amazon / Colorado thing Steve. Being in NC and a state that they do not cater to, I can relate for sure!

If staying with Amazon is the only choice some affiliates want to go with, they need to establish residency in another state.

    Mark,

We’re not moving, and we’re willing to change affiliates.

Whom do you suggest as an alternative to Amazon after you have a site that ranks and gets traffic?

    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

@Steve – Hey Steve – it REALLY depends on the niche itself, but finding alternatives is usually a pretty quick fix.

Just depends on what the site traffic is looking for.
