Don’t Let your Ambitions Exceed your Skills!

As we continue to Build a Website with WordPress- One of the first things we need to be aware of, are the all the different things that make WordPress such a Great Platform for our goals! When you first login to your admin, it can be rather daunting to say the least… all these choices and not knowing where to start! I always revert back to something my father once told me… Know your own Limitations and If you Don’t know what it does – Don’t Touch it!

Getting in Over Your Head with WordPress in the First 5 Minutes!

Just to be sure, experimenting is GREAT! It will teach you all kinds of new things you never knew you could do, and never knew the application was capable of doing for you! The problem surfaces when you start experimenting before you really know WHY you are even doing so! The most common mistake made with new WP users revolves around the use of Plugins. There are lists of plugins readily available on the web and when you see them, you assume you need to install them also! Please – Resist the urge until you actually have a NEED for the plugin, and understand what it will do for you to support your goals!

This entire series of posts has been focused on learning the basics of WordPress first- as we get deeper into the series, we will talk about the 3-5 Plugins you should have, versus the 100+ you may eventually WANT to have for their different purposes and benefits to your goals.

Do you remember the day you got your drivers license? Did you immediately go out and drive 150 mph on that first day? Well… maybe if you had a death wish, but most of us started out driving slowly and very carefully, paying attention to each and every little thing we did as we learned more about our cars, our driving habits and our own limitations. As our driving skills improved, we tried new things and got more daring, with a pretty good understanding of what would happen if we fudged up!

Don’t interrupt your building and learning process by being frustrated with things you don’t know or understand, it will only make it harder!

Mark, I love plugins and probably have way too many on a few of my blogs, but I try to justify the need for them all, just because I love em. :)

You have created a great set of very helpful posts. I have a couple of friends that want to start their own blogs, finally. I will point them to your blog so they can learn to do it correctly.
