ePN Users Pay Attention – Significant Update for You!
If you use cloaking on your site, or still have BANS sites around that are running every link through a 302 redirect, you have 4 weeks to fix it, or your account will be expired.
ePN has a post about this on their blog, and in the last paragraph… it’s very clear:
If you are currently using a 302 redirect in a method similar to the one described above, please inform us by emailing CS and make the appropriate changes immediately. From JuneĀ 8th 2010, we will treat this issue as an intentional breach of our terms and conditions and any affiliate exhibiting this behavior will be expired.
In other words – FIX IT!
If you follow the forum at all, Onelung has started a thread that will serve to help people with this… and the easiest solution is to just switch to phpBay, with it’s latest updates!

Wow! Thanks for sharing this tidbit of information. I was unaware of this.
Okay, my ignorance is about to show… Is it safe to assume that BANS cloaked links are cloaked using a 302 redirection?
If so, am I safe to simply uncloak the links? It will be way too much effort to switch my two BANS sites over to phpBay Pro.
Also, I’ve got some redirection plugins on some of my blogs, which might be used for eBay links (I really don’t think so, but it’s possible). How can I see if the redirections are 302, or something else?
Does phpBay Pro NOT use a 302 redirection?
Thanks,
Rochelle
Never mind about my question regarding phpBay Pro. I just got the email from Wade that addresses this very issue.
Rochelle
@Rochelle – Yeah Rochelle… if you still use BANS and they are cloaked, they are 302′s. You can look into your cPanel > AWStats > of the site and you will see if 302′s are being generated as well.
Soggy Dave posted that Sonjay created a fix for BANS and she has a full post about it on the BANS forum.
I wish I could say I knew for sure about the phpbay stuff… but since walking pretty far away from ePN, I have somewhat gotten out of touch with it.
Mark
Thanks for the BANS fix link. Sonjay rocks! She is so good about supporting BANS, even though it has faded from the memory of most who bought it, and isn’t even hers to support.
This just makes me appreciate Amazon so much more. They have yet to pull the rug out from their affiliates.
Rochelle
Agreed for sure!
OH geez … thanks Mark for posting this … I haven’t been connected at all lately either. So … if I understand … for my BANS stores I need to go in and make sure on each store that I’m NOT using cloaked links correct? I will also go to the forum and see if I can understand/handle the “fix” … LOL … you know how this type thing hangs me up. *SmiLes* Suzanne
NP Suzanne…
The bottom line is that NO LINKS pointing to eBay, can be run through a 302 redirect! BANS, when its set to cloak, uses a 302…
So the quick bandaid, is to turn off the cloaking, but the real fix is going to involve more I think.

Makes me glad I no longer depend on these clowns.
@Affiliate X – Yup… I fixed all my issues with them months ago.
Well I can say that today hasn’t been a fun day! I had in mind a lot of writing I wanted to do, but instead I’ve been replacing auction.php files across the board. That didn’t take too long, but then I remembered that I tend to manually place cloaked ebay links inside some posts and pages. You know, for those extra items you know your readers want (per keywords), but you don’t particularly have time to write a large post about. So, instead of uncloaking all of those, I am attempting to either write a full post/page about that product, or sending it through to the the search results with a nofollow on it.
In hindsite, it was stupid to put those in. I’m hoping I didn’t do much of that on the rest of my sites.
Hi Mark, and thanks for sharing!
Is it enough to just turn of cloaking for my BANS sites, or must I do something else too?
Thanks!
Arthur
It has been such a long time since I logged into a Bans site that I have forgotten how to do it!
What was it you add to the end of the url?
Thanks!
@Brian – Oh, man. I feel your pain. I remember the switch from CJ to EPN and all the work I had to do to fix my links. And then the various format changes they kept doing, the RSS mess… Ugh!
If I was still interested in seriously promoting eBay (and I’m not for any number of reasons) I would spend some time making sure that wherever I put an eBay link was somewhere where I could edit it on a fairly universal basis. I know it’s not ideal sometimes for placement, but you can’t rely on eBay to leave their formatting alone.
And if I was just joining or thinking of joining EPN, I’d think twice about spending a lot of my time on a network who places all of the responsibility for traffic control and quality, technical issues, etc. with the affiliate and is apparently willing to dump that affiliate at any moment with little recourse for failing to meet their ever-changing requirements.
My two cents.
Mark mentioned above that Sonjay created a fix for BANS and she has a full post about it on the BANS forum.
I am a BANS user but can not see how to register for the forum.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Doug
