Finding the Right Brands for A Product Review Site

This post is part 3 of the Review Site Blueprint series . Thus far, we have determined the Type of Product Review Site we will be building and also learned a way to Determine if a Review Site is Worth Building, based on the overall amount of sales it produces.

One thing I forget to move over was the simple worksheet I use on EVERY product review site I build. It is a simple text file, that gives you a way to plan and track your efforts! Right-Click and save to your local system.

Today – you are going to learn one method for Finding the Best Selling Brands for your Review site, so you can start you build with brand names you KNOW are not only in demand, but make up the meat of a Best Seller list somewhere!

Just like yesterdays post, if you do not have a TeraPeak Account – you will be very limited with what you can research and not be able to complete these exercises on your own review sites.

Goal of This Section

  • Locate the ALL [BRANDS] of Products People are Buying Right Now on eBay!
  • PowerRank the [BRANDS] based on Brand Sales Volume and Sell Rate!
  • Record Plenty of Notes for Future Use on The Website

Overview

In this segment, we are going to evaluate the [BRANDS] that people are BUYING on eBay. By the time you finish this exercise, you will have a list of the most common Brand Names of Products that fill the demands of your Niche Product Review Site. In the end, these are the same Brands you want to stock the virtual shelves of your Niche Site with.

Step 1 – Finding [BRANDS] That are In Demand

As you complete this step, you will no doubt see MANY specific [PRODUCTS] that are associated with the [BRANDS]. If you wish to record them, feel free. However, we will be covering [PRODUCT] selection in the next exercise. There is NO NEED to waste energy on it at this point, as they may NOT be target [PRODUCTS] for this site.

  1. Login to TeraPeak and Drill Into the Main Category you Found during the Market Viability Exercise, showing 90 day results.
  2. In the “Listings” section, Sort by “Bids” with the highest numbers of bids shown first.
  3. Make a note in your RankSpanker Blueprint of the Most Common BRAND names you see.
  4. Repeat this over 3-5 Pages of Results… So you have a list of the Top Brands that are in [Highest Demand]
  5. Go Out Onto the Web and Find other Authorities in the Same Niche – Making Notes of the BRANDS they Promote on Their Own Website.
  6. Once Completed, you should have a list of AT LEAST 10 BRANDS of products to fill your niche. You may have considerably more!

If you find that creating a group of at least 10 BRANDS is too hard, you may be focusing on the wrong [TYPE} of website. Please review the "Identifying your Niche Type" section.

Where to Look for [BRAND] Lists (Watch 3:22 Video)

Examples

  1. Women’s Jeans Brand Search – Watch the 4:32 Minute Video
  2. Skateboards Brand Search – Watch the 5:27 Minute Video

Step 2 – Power Rank Your [BRAND] List

Now that you have a long list of [BRAND] names, you need to check if people are buying within each [BRAND].

  1. Login to TeraPeak and Drill Into the Main Category you Found during the Market Viability Exercise.
  2. Type the first [BRAND NAME] on your list into the search box.
  3. Change the Search Trend to 30 Days and Click on Search.
  4. Record the Total Number of “Items Sold” and the “Sell Through Rate” to the right of the Brand Name on your Worksheet. (Round sell-rate to nearest whole number)
  5. Repeat this process for every [BRAND NAME] on the list until completed.
  6. Remove ALL [BRANDS] that did not generate AT LEAST ONE Item Sale/Day on Average.

Once completed, you will have long list of [BRANDS] & “Number of Items Sold” & “Sell Through Rate” on your worksheet.

Now we simply need to use a little basic math to Power Rank our list, based on the Highest Number of Sales and the Highest Sell Through Rate.

  1. Go down the list and record the RANK of each [BRAND] as it relates to the Number of Items Sold. (1,2,3,4,5…)
  2. Go down the list and record the RANK of each [BRAND] as it relates to the Highest Sell Through Rate. (1,2,3,4,5…)
  3. Add the NIS Rank to the STR Rank to find the [BRAND] PowerRank!

The LOWEST Numbers are The HIGHEST Ranked Brands and those you Should Focus on First!

Examples:

  1. Women’s Jeans Brand Power Ranking – Watch the 11:13 Minute Video
  2. Skateboards Brand Power Ranking – Watch the 8:11 Minute Video

Next Installment

I may take a day or two off for the New Year, then again… maybe not! In the next installment of the Review Site Blueprint, we are going to repeat this exact process, but take it a step deeper and find the exact products, from each of the top selling brands, that we will initially focus on with our new site.

Comments, Questions? Bueller? :-) Have a Great New Year everyone!

Great videos Mark, Thanks you really know how to inspire me to do proper research…

Great stuff again Mark, nice to see how other people “rank” what is the best seller.

I was just going through Terapeak, sorting by bids to see the items with the highest “interest” and then going from there.

@Tao – I actually did the same thing for awhile Tao, looking at items with the most bids. I found that I would build a page around a product and only have 1-2 items to pull in for listings…

On the other hand – using the highest demand products DOES have a place in seeding content once you get some visitors to the site!! Drop in a post about “Top” products, using the same data. “Top 5 Coffee Pots in November 2009″ etc.

@Ottidid – Glad you are enjoying the research Otis! Once you do this on a few brands, you can whip out a whole site report in 30-45 minutes.

    Hi Mark,

Great videos and explaination, really enjoying following along so far. I’m creating 5 reports whilst following along with your series for 5 new sites I’m building this month.

Looking forward to the next instalment :)

    Mark,

I will repeat that I used this exact method during my beta testing and it really opened my eyes! This is exactly what I was looking for. No longer throwing darts at a field of brands/products that appeared to have interest. Now, I have a solid method for evaluating them.

I will also repeat that the sites I’ve set up using this in conjunction with the N1Way system are doing better than all the other sites set up using what I previously used which I call “scientific guesswork.”

The best part is having a method like this and N1Way has allowed me to reduce the time I take to build these sites and allows me to focus on other opportunities as they present themselves.

I must say, it is very important to look for brands outside of eBay for this task. Sites like google shopping and Nextag are excellent for getting more brands which can then be re-entered into Terapeak. I have found loads more brands are worth persuing that way.

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

@Tao – Nextag has been one of the most rewarding places I use Tao. I will open the source code of a page, copy their entire list (Usually 25-50 brands long) then research every one of them.

After doing it for a short while, you will find you can tell if a brand is worthy within a couple seconds each, making the task much quicker.

    Mark,

Are you saying you pull brands from Nextag and research them in Terapeak?

    Jeff

  • Mark Hansen (author) said:

@Jeff – I pull them from several resources and research them… just like step 1 above. I have found Nextag has a very thorough list of brands.

I’m blown away with this information that you’re sharing. Thank you so much.
