Friday Morning Roundup…
I have been busier than heck over at the N1Way Readers Guide website for the past week or two, and many of you who have followed along on the build and process have helped create quite a community over on the site! For everyone else, if you look in the sidebar to the right, you will notice I have pulled my last 5 posts from that site over here as well. It’s a quick and easy way to provide a little insight to that site. (Rochelle, thanks for noticing!)
Friday Roundup of Summarized Information!
Link Building…
There has been a bit of talk on the BANS forum and around the web about building links to your new sites. How to do it, the best methods, link directories etc. If you are following the N1WAY Guide, there are only two methods you need to be concerned with…
Forward and Backwards linking. Ben actually wrote a great post about it earlier this week… in his BANS Experiment. The one thing he mentions that we must remember about these sites, is that we want to do “Only Whats Needed, and Nothing More”, otherwise, we begin investing too much time in them before we ever know if they are going to produce or not.
In a nutshell -
Backward linking - Means linking to other existing authority sites! Don’t be a cheese with your own site, if its worth being ranked well in Google and other engines, its worth it for YOU to link to them also!
Forward Linking - Monitor news and blogs for new topics that are related to your site! When you see them, explore and see if you comment, ask for a link, etc.
Link Directories…
While MANY FFA directories have most definitely lost their luster, they do provide a link for bots to follow to your site. Google has widely discounted the links from FFA (Free for All) directories that ANYONE can get into, so before you DO jump out and submit, make sure you do a bit of research and only choose directories that related to your niche site. Google has even removed the reference in their own Webmaster guidelines, suggesting you submit to directories…
If you do however submit to directories -
1 – ALWAYS submit your site to DMOZ.org. It is the highest authority directory on the web according to Google and other authority sites. It powers Googles’ own directory, and its free! It may take a few months to get the site listed, but as long as you submit to the right section and have a site that provides value, you will get approved at some point. DMOZ retains its powerful strength for one reason… they don’t let everyone in, and every entry is scrutinized to make sure its worthy of being listed. If you have done your site building right, it is!
Over the last 15 years of building and promoting websites, I would venture to guess the approval rate at DMOZ is 85-90%… but you MUST only ask once, and just go about your business. I have seen it take longer than a year to see sites show up!
2 – Find Niche Related Directories Only! The once powerful FFA directories used to make no difference to search engines. Now, if you MUST spend time to get into directories, do it with care! I mean, you are already spending some time to do the task, why not make it pay off and use the type that elate to your site and will actually drive some visitors! Do a search in Google for “niche” + “directory”, and you will get a list of relevant directories that are specific to your niche market.
3 – Last Alternative, Buy your Way in! - If you decide that you have the cheese to spare, head to the Aviva Strongest Directories list, which are power ranked according to a SEOMoz formula, and start at the top to find the ones you want to be in! MAKE SURE your site is up to the snuff before you do, or just wasted some cash!
4 – Avoid Services that Randomly Submit your link Everywhere! I used to use free and paid services to blow the link out to anywhere that would accept it… that was a couple years ago, when it actually made more of a difference! This is the entire reason FFA link directories have died off… If they let everyone in, what makes them useful to the web?
I have a directory of my own that I scrutinize EVERY link that is submitted… and turn away 3 out of 10. One day, I hope it too has authority.
For more on directories – Matt Cutts from Google has a great little 2 minute video on YouTube discussing paid directories and FFA directories.
Press Releases…
There is a difference between a free press release and a paid, properly built press release. I opted for the cheap way out and chose a low cost release, just to get some exposure to the Golf Putter Site. in effect, its nothing more than article marketing… If you truly want to spend the time to do it right, ProBlogger has an article today about how to get the attention of the press.
Content Contest….
Are you looking for content for your site? Paid Scribe is holding a Twitter Contest and awarding the winner with a free SEO Article package!! Today is the last day to enter… so hurry in!!
Finally…
Try to remember the Mantra of the New N1Way Readers Guide…
“Do Only As Much Thats Needed – and Nothing More!”

Another wonderful, informative article worth printing and saving! :)
You didn’t mention article submissions, however. A well-written, highly targeted article can bring in quite a bit of traffic from ‘high quality’ article directories (i.e. ezinearticles, Goarticles, Articlesbase, etc.).
Of course, this step might be pushing the N1Way Readers Guide mantra – “Do Only As Much That’s Needed – and Nothing More!â€
Of course, down the road, if you do find that your niche is profitable, it would definitely be worth persuing!

Mark – Just curious, but when you add links to already well-ranked, niche related sites, do you:
- Add them to a blogroll in your site’s sidebar/footer?
- Nofollow the links?
Rochelle
@ Caroline – Agree about articles for sure! Although, they are starting to lose the luster like directories as well.
@ Rochelle –
I added a link page to the putter site – ALL links are most definitely “followed”, and before the 90 day period is over, I will actually link directly from the review pages (the money pages) to other sites as well.
I try to avoid “sitewide” links unless it is in a sidebar like blogroll. Whihc are much LESS effective than single page links.
Mark
Mark – I’m looking at your putter guide’s link page (I like the format, btw). Regarding the code you added at the bottom:
- How did you add that little box with the code?
- Is the code correct? Seems like there are a good many tags at the end.
Rochelle
@ Rochelle –
Thanks for the code find – its a property of using html code int he text editor with BANS.
All I used to get the copy/paste section, was a < textarea>
< textarea> what you want in the middle < /textarea>
(I put a couple extra spaces in that so it would display)
Mark
Mark – Thanks! Such a simple way to encourage linking.
Rochelle
Just in your own style, you have hit the nail. Great to notice the simplicity of your ideas.
Its awesome
