Hold Off on BANS EPN Update for Now, or Use Great Diligence in Checking Functionality!

Well… we all may have gotten too excited too quickly, or something like that anyhow! :-)

EDIT – THE FILES AT THE BANS UPDATE SITE HAVE BEEN FIXED! MAKE SURE YOU DOWNLOAD THE LATEST VERSIONS.

I have to recommend holding off on your BANS updates for the time being… sure, we ALL want to get this done as quickly as possible, myself included, but there are bugs… many of them at the moment! If you want to go ahead and do these updates… keep close track of all things not working, AND MAKE SURE you run through every page of your site to check that it is working correctly.

The main reason I recommend waiting… if you update 30 sites today and find that you need to do it all again tomorrow or the next day, is very counter productive! I have to agree with one of the reader, Sean I believe, who said… wait a few days, let the bugs get worked out, then do the updates.

If you downloaded and installed the BANS-v3.0-EPN-Full-Download file, the FIRST thing you need to do is go in and change the database.sql file, otherwise, you also MUST run the update on it! Your sites won’t work if you don’t! EVERY new site will need to be updated again!

1) How to Fix the EPN number issue in sql. (Applies to BANS-v3.0-EPN-Full-Download ONLY)

Using notepad or a similar text editor, open database.sql and search for: CREATE TABLE `options` . About 10 lines below this code you will find,  ‘cj_pid’ int(11) . you MUST change this to ‘cj_pid’ varchar(15) or your stores will not accept the eBay EPN numbers.

2) Updating a 2.0 Store to 3.0

Currently, the download files DO NOT have the full update! If you download BANS-v3.0-EPN-Update-Pack, all you are doing is updating a fully patched 3.0 store to the EPN store. It WILL NOT update 2.0 to 3.0.

If you want to that update, you must:

a: Download (hopefully, you already have the files, they are not listed in the update section of BANS) the 2.0 to 3.0 upgrade-Patched files.
b: Install the 2.0-3.0 update
c: Download and install BANS-v3.0-EPN-Update-Pack
d: Test, Test, Test…

The biggest issue I see from this update is the lack of multiple category stores. The update does not pull in your multi-category list and you have to check each site page individually, possibly resetting them. I have also found that my search box no longer works… I can search for a term on the page on my screen, and it comes up blank.

I will use this post as a running update of the issues…

Mark

Is it possible to still get the 3.0 regular update? Silly me thought I could update 2.0 to 3.0 EPN, so held off on updating and never downloaded 3.0. I certainly don’t want to bother Adam or Kelvin about it now if anyone knows another way of downloading it – if there is another update page with the older files I’m not aware of?

I do not think there is… at least, I have not found it! I do have a request into them for the info though.

    Hey Mark – All,

It is ironic that you say to hold off on the EPN Update – I went against it this time because I figured it was just a minor RSS type of update. With all the other updates in the past I would take the wait and see approach. Only reason I updated a few sites is because this update is on a timetable which has to be completed by May 1st. Yesterday I downloaded the updates within 10 minutes after I saw the email. I try not to touch nothing but the footer, header, logo and stylesheets on all of my sites.

I updated 8 sites yesterday and all are reporting in the new ebay partner program. 4 were 1.3 versions and 4 were 3.0 versions. 2 of the 3.0 versions I had upgraded last week from 2.0 to 3.0 – However, I may wait a few days before updating any others and for testing.

Only issue I came across was that the homepage wasn’t displaying products for the 1.3 stores. But when I added a search term (added the term in the admin panel on the homepage section) the products displayed. To me it isn’t an issue or showstopper since I want to upgrade all of my 1.3 stores to 3.0 anyways. I didn’t change any coding or add any mods to those stores prior to the updates. I am using Godaddy hosting.

Totally agree on the 2.0 to 3.0 upgrade. I would upgrade a 2.0 store to 3.0 first, then run the 3.0 epn update on it afterwards.

    Mark,

Will you please expand on what we should look for if we check EACH and EVERY page? I have checked some of my pages but don’t know what I should be looking for.

On a slightly different note, most of my stores are built on keywords using ’0′ as a category instead of eBay category numbers. Will this benefit me regarding the EPN upgrade problems?

I did update my 3 sites.. granted i don’t have near the stores to update as some of you do.. But i did go ahead and update them..
the ONLY problem i have seen is when i add a new store, in the product info section, if you click on “view numbers” to view categories, I get a weird looking page from my own site.. it’s like it shows you a page of all the #’s you have in that block already.. this is on the new site i uploaded last night with the new software and on the 3 sites i’ve updated..

but i don’t understand the statement you made Mark.. if i installed the new store last night, with the new software i downloaded.. why do i have to change the database.sql file?? and what do i change?
and do you mean change that database.sql AND run the update or is that one or the other.. is that a bug fix or what? i’m confused..
I installed the new store with the new software and the campaign # was accepted and is there on my page.
am i totally missing something here?
    thanks!

    Mark,

I just went back to the download area for the download of EPN and see that there is now a version that updates v2 stores to v3 and includes ALL fixes.

I downloaded the files as soon as the email came yesterday and I swear this wasn’t there before. I downloaded all files that were available at that time and this wasn’t in my download folder. So, this may take care of those wanting to upgrade to v3. Of course, it may still cause the problems others are having and since I already upgraded all my v2 stores I am unable to test it.

actually i did just notice that on my 1 store that i used one of the templates from here, the links in the banner now give me a big ole 404 error…

    @ Rochelle -

If you used a 0 and built your site based on keywords, you are fine. I found several pages in my first upgraded site (2.0-3.0 upgrade) that were no longer pulling the category numbers into the search box… It may be that they are some of the categories affected by the eBay category number changover, but I only worked to get them running without looking too deep into it.

    @ Jeff -

The 3.0-EPN-Upgrade works fine… if you are updating a 3.0 store to the newer 3.0 with EPN, you are fine.

IF on the other hand, you downloaded the BANS-v3.0-EPN-Full-Install, the database.sql file inside the zip file does NOT have the correct inforomation and will not store your new campaign ID’s.

FOR NEW INSTALLS – You have to do one of two things… either correct the sql database table file BEFORE installing store, or run the BANS-v3.0-EPN-Upgrade files on the site after it is installed.

You will know if it is correct or not by changing your campaign ID and seeing if it remains in place after you click save. In some cases, it is not saving the new ID numbers.

Post the site with the error… I dont think any of the 3.0 templates had the title mod in place.

this is what’s confusing.. i did install a new store with the new software and DID NOT update.. and it did accept my new ID number.. so i should be fine on that as well ??

the site with the template you made that gives me the error is..

Jeff – If I were you I’d run the v3 EPN update files just to be safe. There may be some other problems that aren’t visible. It’ll take you a minute to complete and may be worth the piece of mind.

    Mark,

I fear I’m getting a tad confused with all the different versions of the EPN upgrade and the problems associated with some of them but not others.

Would you say I’d be ok to simply use the v2 to v3 EPN upgrade for all v2 AND v3 sites? I’m thinking this would cover all the v3 fixes as well as prevent the EPN problems from the other versions of this upgrade.

I just came from the BANS forum, and there is a new (or at least what appears to be new) download to switch to EPN. Has anyone tested this yet?

OK, I am beyond confused! Too many updates floating around and too many possible issues!

I thought this was supposed to be an easy fix!! How come it isn’t just a simple “search and replace” … replace ‘cj_pid’ int(11) with ‘cj_pid’ varchar(15) ??? I’m no programmer by any means but why is this such a big deal?

For once, I’m glad I’m not making any money with this yet. Just reading about it has been a huge time hog … and I haven’t learned anything definitive yet on what I should or shouldn’t be doing!

I haven’t yet done the update on the BANS side of things and I am concerned that I am going to be in the same boat as you, Cindy. i too have no experience with all the programming side of things so it has been a challenge – but a fun one so far! Hopefully, these updates don’t send me over the edge! :-)

    Mark,

Are you going to do a “step-by-step” on how to complete the switchover?

I’m one of those “wait and see” guys and haven’t touched anything yet…..was wondering if I should wait for instructions or just go ahead now….

    Thanks…as always!

    Hi Mark,

This is to say thank you for your concern and to let you know that I am not in a hurry! ;-)

When you find out that it is the right time to fix the v3 to the new v3 EPN, please give me – or – us…. the green light.

Meanwhile, I will be surfing TNSB and learn your secrets!!

    Thanks again,

I have installed the BANS-V3.0 EPN update, but something is wrong. Site looks fine, but when you click on a click to go to the Ebay auction to bid, you get the following message:

“This listing () has been removed, or this item is not available.”

Can anyone help and let me know what the problem is?

    Thanks!

    Hi Mark,

Appreciate the quick response. How do I find out if I’m using redirect links?

    Thanks!

    Hey Les –

If you are still using BANS – you need to jump into the BANS forums and look for the post Sonjay started with the fixes. (http://www.nichesitebuilding.com/forum/index.php)

BANS is no longer officially supported… so all fixes are user contributed.

Many people are moving to phpBay / WordPress simply due to the support still provided by Wade.
