Installing WordPress through your HostGator Account

In yesterdays Weekly Review post, I mentioned that I would be starting from scratch to help everyone learn more about using BANS with WordPress. This post is the first I will be doing, which covers installing WordPress by using Fantastico, provided with your HostGator account.
The process is really as simple as 3 mouse clicks after you have logged into your cPanel.
If you don’t use HostGator for wordpress hosting, you should check it out.

Hi Mark,
Can you please help?
It’s been a while since I did anything with bans and wanted to try to catch up with the new stuff.
I was following your really clear to follow video on installing wordpress (videos are great) through fantastico but got the followiing message.
The installation can not be completed:
- You chose to install in the main directory of the domain homelecs.co.uk, but there are conflicting filenames, therefore we can not proceed. Following filenames already exist in the main directory of the domain homelecs.co.uk (path=”/home/trevnic/public_html/”).You must manually remove these files before proceeding with auto-installation:
index.php
Click on the browser’s Back button to fix reported errors.
Have I missed out on some instructions?
Trevor
@ Trevor -
Fantastico is telling you that you already have the htacccess and index.php files on the root of the domain, so you dont accidentally overwrite them.
If you are fine with losing them, just go into your cPanel > file manager, and delete the files first.
Its a safeguard built into cPanel.
Bear in mind, if you already have BANS installed on the root of the domain, it will no longer work. BANS and WordPress MUST be in separate directories.
Mark
Mark,
I seem to have run into the same problem as Trevor.
However, since I need to install WordPress onto my root domain (public_html) and BANS and WordPress need to be in separate directories, I moved all of my BANS files/folders into a separate folder. As I suspected, I am now receiving 404 errors on my site since I moved the files.
I have not been able to find where in my Cpanel I can change where my website is being served from.
I will keep looking, but you’ll probably be able to tell me the answer before I find it (will let you know if I find it first).
Thanks for your continued support.
Mark
Mark,
No need to reply to my post above. Found your post for Moving BANS off of the root domain and will follow the video instructions for the original store and addon domains.
Should have known that you’d already have the instructions somewhere.
Thanks
Mark
Where’s the video Mark? I want to start making WP the root as well.
Thanks
Never mind. I found them now as well :)
Mark,
I am trying to completly redo my website. I previously made it with site studio, and would like to switch to wordpress. I did your wordpress installation, but when I go to my website I dont see wordpress, just the old site that I made with sitestudio. How can I erase this old site and start fresh with wordpress?
Thanks
