Looking for Niche’s

February 7, 2008

Some of the ways I look for Niche’s

My office is such a mess snapping a photo of that might make everyone think “SLOB”.  Actually my whole house has become part of my Internet business’s.  2 stock rooms and a office. Sometimes its hard to find my bed.  Just joking its not that bad.

I see folks are ready to dive into this. Try to be methodical in the thought process. When I 1st started I jumped the gun and skipped some of the basics which really held me back. I was so excited to find BANS that I threw up sloppy sites that I now have to go back and change around. Not that they don’t convert, they just aren’t up to my standards. Just about any BANS site will convert no matter how bad it looks. It’s the stuff that users don’t see that gets them to the site. Marks process is right on target. Follow the steps and your good to go.

The process of looking for niches is pretty fluent for me. I generally am always thinking about new niche markets 24/7, even in my sleep.  Everything about my life has been overwhelmed by niche building. The environment around me is constantly bringing inspiration.  Since I am online all day every day paper isn’t really part of the process I use, but it should be. There’s nothing worse than having a brain storm and 5 Min’s later forgetting the details. As soon as a niche idea comes to me I go directly to the Internet and start looking around. Within 10 minutes I will have a half dozen windows open and 2 computers runing. As a Ebay seller for 6+ years looking around ebay is a daily process that is just done everyday automatically. Getting to know Ebay is critical. Beleive me when I say there are areas on Ebay that most never see.

Inspiration comes from listening to others and keeping a hawk eye on the markets. One of the best ways to get ideas for me is the news. CNBC has given me niche ideas more than once. I also buy magazines when I am grocery shopping. Trade magazines and cateloges from Internet retailers like LL Bean all have items that folks are wanting but the price is a little steep and could take off as a Ebay item. Basically I am always looking for niche’s in every part of my life. Now that my friends and family see that this dose work and it is changing my life they pass along there ideas. My 77 year old dad has grey hair and he could not find a special shampoo for guys with grey hair. Low and behold its on Ebay and the seller can’t keep it in stock. Bingo. Mind you the commission on shampoo is low but, demand is high.

For me once I have a niche idea the process to build a niche store starts right then looking for any competition and keyword rich domains.

Thats a good tip Bill. I enjoy watching CNBC. The show stated that in a recession, consumer goods such as soaps and shampoos are still in demand. Think of those narrow segments and what the consumer will not do without. Supply and demand may lead to higher conversions.

    Hi Bill,

I have a question about eBay that maybe you can answer.

I found an item that goes with my niche but when I search for it
on eBay it shows zero searches but lists two items from two
    different eBay stores.

My question is there a way that I can list the two items on my
BANS site and get credit for them. They have a very high KEI and
    5 for competition.

@ Phil-You can just sell products from there stores. Its a little tricky w/V2 but V3 has a easy way to do this. It will be out at the end of the month. I suggest getting the domain name. A better answer for V2 is in the BANS forum.

    Thanks Bill,

I have the domain and website up at this time. It was a sub-category that the product was in.
