I previously wrote that I would use some of our existing domains for this experiment, but later decided I would do some research on a few ideas I had swirling around in my mind. As Mark was writing his Niche Research article, I rudely interrupted him to run a few ideas past him. In 5 short minutes, he helped me turn my “broad” subjects, into niches. Its funny how you can have these great ideas, then someone like Mark pops that bubble - then brings you right back up again by helping you drill down to the actual niche. I, unfortunately, did not save all that research the other night, but I will re-do it for this post. I did not follow the same steps that Mark outlined - but the results are pretty much the same none the less.
My first idea was “baby accessories”. Obviously, not a niche, but initial idea. Mark had me think about what categories I would put under baby accessories - my first thought was cribs and bedding. So, over to www.wordze.com to do a little research. I typed in “crib” - below is what I got:
As you can see, “baby crib bedding” comes up #1 along with “crib bedding” at #2 - I’m thinking crib bedding might be a good niche. In addition, if any of you are looking for a niche, “Beyonces Crib Crashers Room on MTV” looks promising - LOL!
Anyway…..Over to Google Sandbox - I typed in:
Results:
After looking at the Estimated CPC - they range from $1.09 to over $2. Probably more during the months of demand
I did not initially use Terapeak - I went over to eBay to look at the completed listing or items actually sold, how much they sold for and how often. Searching for “baby crib bedding” I come up with quite a few completed (sold) auctions and a decent average price. It looks like about 9 out of 10 sell. Its looking like a pretty decent niche.
Decided to pop over to Terapeak. Again, I search for “baby crib bedding”. Total listings of 8,484 with over 5,000 sold - a 58% sell through rate. Average selling price of $51 - $58. That is pretty good! I did additional searches on just “crib bedding” and the results were almost identical.
I repeated this process on several other niche ideas - So, I think I’ve decided on a few and I’m over to GoDaddy to snatch a couple of domains!

Some great ideas here. I had used the AdWords tool before but never saw the option to show average CPC which makes it 1000% more useful.
Great article and looking forward to all the info thats on its way. One question you said that you “went over to Google Sandbox”.
Never heard of it - it is some software, program, website. Confused.
Many thanks
Phil
Hi Phil
The Google Sandbox Keyword Suggestion Tool is free and is a good starting point for researching your “initial” phrases for niche stores. I say intial, because it helps to narrow down exact phrases people are searching for and HOW they are typing in their searches - so…. it will help you to narrow your niche! You can put in quite a few phrases or just one keyword if you like. Its a great starting point! Mark also refers to it in his Market Research article - thats actually how I discovered it - of course, from Mark!
Its at: https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
Hope that helps!

Kim - Can you edit out the period ( . ) at the end of the URL for the Google sand box? It is including it when the link is clicked on and brings up to a bad URL.
Rochelle -
OOPS! sorry about that - all done!
Much better! : )
Thanks for this link, btw. I’ve seen Mark and others discuss the Google sand box but never knew where it was located. I’ll add this link to the toolbar on the next update.
Looks like we have two Phil’s here so I added my last
initial.
