Ning Social Networks and Bans

I thought the following might be interesting for Bans users as well as developers:

Ning offers a social network package where you can create a social network using their platform. Network creators try to monetize their networks with ads and other services.

Below is an example of a Bans user who is using a social network from Ning within his bans store – click the “Join The Community” link in the bans menu:

Basically the way it works is that Ning supports thousands of social networks unless an individual Network Creator decides to request the source code for their network – at that point they no longer receive automatic updates when Ning updates their platform, but they are free to modify their network as they see fit.

Their are tens of thousands of Ning social networks out there but there seems to be only just a handful of developers who are developing addons or modifications for the platform. Mostly the developers are creating addon apps that don’t require source code access. These usually involve creating javasrcipt based widgets. Below is a link to the most popular of these developers:

Below are my networks:

From what I hear the Ning platform is sort of unique and has a bit of a learning curve associated with it. Below is a link to the Ning Developer Network where they have documentation on the system architecture:

I’m interested in finding someone to do some custom development for my social networks so if anyone feels that they might be comfortable working with the Ning platform give me a shout.

Thanks for sharing! I think if we all put our heads together and try and use BANS websites in a unique way, we will all sleep better at night.

I like this post, however, I’m not too techinical so maybe that’s why I don’t understand this whole Ning thing whatsoever :o(

Thats ok thought, lets keep up the good work and if anyone has any other ideas please share!! I will do the same :o) I am currently brainstorming and I think its going to pay off, will let you all know when Ive come up with the million dollar idea :o)

The site is amazing! I wonder if it is ever possible for me to make my bans site any where near to that, with my technical background(0)

I’ve been hearing tons of buzz around Ning lately, and I know someone who has started their own network with great success early on.

I really believe Ning to become a heavy hitter with the Internet marketing crowd. In regards to the technicality, I can only see that placing a hurdle in front of those who don’t have the time to learn.. as time is usually our biggest investment online… In the beginning that is..

Hello, I developed gearupandplay. Thanks for the mention dave, haha, I looked at my statcounter and was wondering why I was getting a run of people from here. At the same time however I am in building so I took the link down but I put it back up now.

I sort of took on Ning before I was ready because my store still needs alot of work. Im not a real technical person Chelsea. Ning is really that simple. If you start to use it you will see what I mean. I simply started before I really had alot of time to invest in it. Im hoping to dig real deep into it soon.

    Good luck guys
