Questions Regarding Linking…

Hello All!

Recently, I’ve had a few questions come up while getting backlinks to my BANS sites to try and get them indexed in Google, MSN and Yahoo.  I’m sure that I’m not the only one with these questions, so I decided to put up a post about it in order to “put it to rest”.

I’ve been with BANS for around 3 months now, and I’ve always had questions about linking, internal linking, deep linking, submitting to directories for links etc….and the proper way to go about doing it.  So, as I’ve gone along with the Build a Niche Empire Series, I’ve been writing down some questions.  Here they are:

*hopefully I make sense when trying to explain! Undecided*

1. Getting Multiple Links From One Site:  For instance, let’s say that I’m submitting a link to a site that has a PR 4 and allows me to get as many links as I want.  Is it beneficial for my site to gain multiple links from this site to deeper pages in my BANS site?  Or are you only credited with that site’s PR 4 once…making more than one link a waste of time/effort?

2. Internal Linking on a BANS Site:  I’ve been doing this on my previous stores, but wondered if it’s good, bad…neither.  What I do is edit my TOP category pages so that, in the text, I include a link to each product page that resides in that specific category.  I do this for every main category page.  For instance, I have BLUE WIDGETS as a category page and I include links to all the product pages like: “In this section, you’ll find round blue widgets, square blue widgets and rectangular blue widgets.”  I’ve heard that internal linking within your site is a good thing, but I’d love to hear some feedback from you SEO savvy people!

3. Duplicate Content/Backlinks:  Here’s a good one…there are many good directory submitting software programs out there that fill in the directory forms for you with a pre-determined text.  My question is, how does this look to the search engines if you’re entering the same 2 or 3 “descriptions” of your site in the submission form?  Is it duplicate content, or does it not matter since it’s just a directory submission?

4. Directory Deep Linking:  This one kinda goes along with Question 1, but if a directory allows it, should we be deep linking to our BANS sites using directories?….or is a link to your Main Page good enough….move on?

5. Mark says, “Go Get 10 Inbound Links”:  Getting 10 links is easy…but, Mark also says to get 10 links every week to help with indexing.  Can these links be from the same sites to different pages on our stores?…or does Mark mean go get 10 links….ALL from different places?

I’m really trying to get this SEO thing down…or the basics at least.  I’ve learned a lot about linking and how backlinks help with a site’s popularity and PR, but every bit helps!  And these questions pop into my head everytime I go looking for links!

Eric

    Eric,

Great questions … and I’d like to add a few.

    1. For clarification purposes, what exactly is meant by “get an inbound link” – does that mean attempt to get one or actually get one?

    2. Using OnlyWire will get you links from many places in one go. Does that count as one link or many? And would you want to link to each of your pages using OnlyWire?

    3. How exactly do you know how many inbound links you have? Using my chainsaw site as an example, my cpanel awstats says there are 32 links from external pages from 17 different page URLs. Many of them are from here. I added 6 links by Kaboodle (5 are showing) and 2 through Clipmarks (1 is showing), there are a couple from emails and a couple I have no idea what they are or where they came from. Yet if I check Yahoo for links, it shows 2 – my main URL and one Kaboodle link. Google and MSN show none. So how many inbound links do I really have?

And I would also like to know the answers to all Eric’s questions.

Good question, both of you! I can’t wait to see the answers.

Cindy – On an unrelated note, MANY posts ago (http://www.thenichestorebuilder.com/i-have-a-confession-to-make.htm to be exact) you asked what to do if you change your site’s structure. I wrote up instructions on how to handle this at http://www.nichestorestrategies.com/how-to-redirect-deleted-or-renamed-urls-to-new-pages-with-a-301-redirect/

I know this doesn’t belong here but I figure the chance of your seeing this comment was much better than on the original topic.

    Cindy,
For your #1 question…Mark is probably wanting us to actually get 10 inbound WORKING links. If you use Digg or StumbleUpon…those are pretty fast, working, inbound links. Some directories have an “approval time” which wouldn’t count as a link until it gets approved and then listed in the directory.

…as far as your #2 question goes, I’m farily certain that OnlyWire accounts for multiple links since you are submitting to a bunch of different sites. Personally, when I use OnlyWire it goes out to 12 sites…Furl, Delicous etc…

I still don’t know if OnlyWire – ing your deeper site pages is worth the time/effort or not.

These are just my interpretations, please correct me if I’m wrong! Offsite SEO is explained and valued differently by different people…..hopefully you SEO experts can shed some light! :D

Sorry for posting this again but it is relevant to this post as in another resource (un-tested) for backlinks. This seems to be very original in it’s approach and it’s free!

IMO everything you do on the Internet should be relevant and contain a H tag if possible and Keywords Where ever you can. You can sneak keywords in blog comments but its not recomended. Its better to establish good relationships with people.

I post different pages to different sites and then digg and Stumble them.

I write discriptions of items on my sites and place them in a blog with a link to the bans site and I stumble both of them.

When I use directory submitters I change the discription every other time I submit that site 10 times. Google has said there is a dup content slap.

Alway promote a different pages on USfreeads and other classifieds.

I promote my blogs as much if not more than the bans site to get links in the back door. Blogs hit the net fast. I write something and its there in a hour with my link back to the bans site.

Like Rochelle and Eric I get my keyword phrases from my Cpanel and otther stats like Google,

Even if a site only gives credit for one backlink in the serp’s if you have a good relationship on the site or forum you just might sell something. Google said there is a slap for duplicate content but not duplicate backlinks, But to many from the same place is regarded as spam from what I have been hearing.
I keep it organic I hate spending $ for backlinks

Just 2 my SEO 2 cents

I’m not sure if this point has been covered so I’ll throw it in anyway.

The main purpose in getting back links is to help with ranking for your keyword phrases. If you look at the name I have used for this post and pass your mouse over it you will see that it links to my BANS home page which is identical to the domain name.

Where possible use this method as you are increasing your ranking for that specific keyword phrase.

Its one thing to get lots of quality back links to your site but they should be specific to your niche other wise you are waisting some of the value of the backlink.

Regarding Onlywire, yes it counts as multiple links, and yes you can link to individual pages separately.

For those of you who have not emailed re “how to get quallity” backlinks with PR try this.

    Paste the following into google

“golf carts” “powered by wordpress” “leave a comment” -”no comments”

But replace “golf carts” with your niche phrase

If you want this explained in detail I can send you the video link which takes you through the process step by step.

Just email me or PM me

Yes, it’s hard getting definitive answers to questions like these.

SEO is a bit of a black art and if one of the gurus suggested sacrificing a chicken, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it started a big run on poultry.

There are so many ‘cyber-myths’ (like urban myths only online :-) out there. I’d really like to know why most internet marketes sell their ebooks and info-products at prices that always end in a ’7′.

All that aside… I love this site and look forward to reading the answers.

    Hi,

How do you go about getting links to your site with different anchor text?

I know about directory submissions and posting on blogs and forums, but that does not help with anchor text linking.

On the same thought how imortant is it?

    Eric,

Since you use OnlyWire quite a bit … are we supposed to be able to see those links somewhere?

I have 11 accounts set up with OnlyWire and have used it on 10 – 12 pages across several different sites but I don’t see evidence of any links from this, either in my cpanel or in Yahoo’s link:mydomain.com where I see results of my other linking efforts.

How do I know things are working as they should?!

    Thanks.
