Reviewing your Logfiles of Build a Niche Store after 30 Days!

March 21, 2008

Well… its been a month or so since you launched your first Build a Niche Store website, and its time to look into your logfiles for the low hanging fruit, or easiest targets for new product pages!

Note: I am also using a different source for hosting the video files. I enrolled in one of HostGators “Unlimited Bandwidth” plans… <grinning> I have uploaded the video onto a different server and it is linked below.

Feedback on the new video is appreciated… good, bad, or otherwise!

I love being able to see the video full screen. Much easier to follow and see what you’re doing. Lots of good info again today.

    Question about changing page names-
In V3, we have the option to turn off pages so they don’t show on our site. Do the SEs still see those pages? I’m wondering because I was beginning to rename some of the urls as I work on them to the full keywords for better optimization, assuming the SEs wouldn’t be indexing them if they were “turned off” and not appearing on my site. Is this okay to do?

    Thanks,
    Sonia

    Another great video!

What do we do if the top search is for an item that has no products for sale at eBay? I’ve run into this on a couple of sites and wasn’t sure whether to create a page anyway.

    Thanks.

    Mark,

I really enjoyed the larger version. The Google vids where small and blurry and I would quickly stray from paying attention due to the blurriness. The audio was very low on this one for me. Great subject as always! Question, Was I absent the day you may have shown us how to put an ad below the header logo in your template?

    Mark,
The video was good quality, no problems at all. Even when you stopped and started still was good. I use Real player and it downladed and played quick and easy… Thanks

    Looks great to me.
? OK so I always forget not to change the URLs. I was working on a site and did change some of them. The site has been crawled. What can I do to prevent 404s. I was thinking of deleting current site map and re-submitting it.
    Thanks Mark

    Mark,

Great Video! Sound was a little low, but nothing I couldn’t fix by turning up my speakers…I acutally heard some of the construction going on in the background!

I have a concern about HTTP ERRORS located at the bottom of the log files page. Some of my sites are getting …well, ALOT…and I’m not sure why or how to fix it.

I’m really concerned because I know that errors are BAD, BAD, BAD for rankings….and I feel like this may be a reason why some of my sites are performing one week….then ZILCH the next!

Great question Eric, I forgot to ask the same thing. Could some of it be coming from the problems the BANS team have been having??

  8. Mark on March 22nd, 2008 1:00 pm

I have actually taken notice of the LARGE (Tens of thousands) of 302 temporary redirects myself. I cannot find anywhere in the code that is generating those and have sent a message into Adam and Kelvin about it.

Is anyone else seeing all those 302’s in their BANS 3.0?

In regard to the rest of them… the 404’s are really your only concern… most of those, are due to a code issue in the admin and when you click on the 404 links, it shows where they are coming from.

Not much to worry about unless you see MANY of your url or site pages generating them.

I just made a post in the blog….then, saw your response, Mark.

In my post, I included “screenshots”….

I just checked my sites and also have VERY large numbers of 302 errors - even on two brand new sites that nobody buy me, a few spiders, and OnlyWire know about.

My 404 errors are pretty high, too, in my opinion. I don’t know what would be acceptable but based on the LOW traffic, these numbers should not be near or above 100.

I did notice a few days ago that one of my sites is now totally removed from Google’s index and maybe this is the cause?!

    This is not good.

    Mark,

I loved the new video format. It was much clearer. I watched it in Windows Media Player.

Very neat run through on how to find new terms to go after. Very helpful.

    Regards,
    Fred

I love the video - it is so clear and easy to understand.

However - when I logged in to my subdomain webstats, none of them are showing any information at all. At the top it just says “no qualified records found in log”.

What is wrong? I know at least some of these sites are being found because I have received some commissions.

I can see all the details OK on the main domain webstats.

I’d be grateful for any help.

  13. Mark on March 22nd, 2008 5:54 pm

    @ Sheila -

I assume you are on HostMonster or some other hosting company than HostGator.

If I recall, when you scroll to the section for logfiles, there is an icon titled “Stats Preferences” or something to that effect. You need to go inside and tick off the stat program you wish to use for each domain.

You will also need to make this a part of the setup process for each new domain you add, so they will track from day 1.

Hi Mark - thanks for your reply.

I am with hostgator and my cpanel looks exactly the same as the one you show in the video.

I just tried clicking on the ’subdomain’ icon and all my subdomains are listed there in ’subdomain maintenance’.
There is a paragraph as follows:

“Note: If you wish to grant virtual ftp access to this subdomain, just create an FTP user with the same username as the subdomain base name that is listed inside the () above. ”

    Is this what I want?

  15. Rochelle on March 22nd, 2008 9:08 pm

The kids are in bed so I finally had 30 minutes to watch this. Excellent, as always.

You asked for comments about the video itself and I do have one. For some reason I couldn’t view the video from your site. I had to download it to watch it. This is the first time this has happened with your videos. I don’t know if it was caused on my end or not but thought I’d mention it.

Of course, you’ve got my curiousity peaked regarding this mysterious tool you use for with your research… I look forward to finding out about that.

How on earth do you manage to do all this manual follow-up AND keep building more sites AND raise seven kids AND run this blog???

  16. Yvette on March 23rd, 2008 10:57 am

    Hi Mark,
I love the new video format too, but I had the same problem as Rochelle, I had to download to watch it. But it was worth it, the big screen is great, especially for seeing the smaller details of print when you work with code and text.

I had a question about stats in general. Since we get so much information from our cpanel, is it necessary or is there any benefit to using other statistics services such as Stat Counter or Going Up? If I can get everything I need from the cpanel I think that would be simplest but just wondering.

    Happy Easter Everyone,
    Yvette

  17. Mark on March 23rd, 2008 11:43 am

    @ Rochelle and Yvette -

In regard to the download versus watching in your browser… it is likely a setting within your own browser, to download versus stream the video.

I will be switching these to a flash video before long, so the issue will go away (And load quicker!!)

In regard to the stats… If you plan on having just 5-10 bans in total, and you plan on using PPC or some other method to drive traffic, I would probably use google analytics (I use it on this blog).

Aside from that, AWStats provides more than enugh info for basic site information. It is really a metter of preference and the reason I speak of AW so much, is because it is included with HG and everyone has it.

    Great video Mark.

Finally I got to see one.

I could never see any of the previous ones. I am very grateful to be able to download it and then watch it. Is there any chance that you could redo the others?

    Hi everyone

Another great video with loads of information I really needed! It’s hilarious - every time I think “Hmmmm….I wonder how to do that….” Mark comes up with another video.

I can’t thank you enough for providing this service. The supportive atmosphere on this blog is the best I’ve ever seen. I usually don’t have the patience to follow anything for very long, but this is tremendous.

Wow - This is great info for a newbie like me.

I had been looking at my AWstats but I really did not know how to interpret and/or use them.

Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!

  23. Phil R on March 28th, 2008 11:24 pm

    Hi Mark,

The video on keyword phase and keywords was great.

I noticed on mine that the top keyword is a sub topic of my main
category and doesn’t show on the menu. I changed the page
according to your instructions but I was wondering if I should
make this page a Content Page so that the topic would show on
    the menu.

Maybe I should have my menu Open instead of Closed.

    Any suggestions would be helpful.

    Thanks,

    Phil R

Great, excellent video. Again, I feel fortunate to have stumbled upon BANS and then your website. The information provided is priceless.

The larger format is wonderful, especially for the over 50 crowd.

    Hi Mark
The Video will not work for me again any other link i can go to please.
    Regards Ken….

  26. Mark on April 5th, 2008 8:00 am

    @ Ken -

By not working… do you mean it wont start, or it is returning an error?

It is set to preload a certain percentage of the video before it starts, so it may take several minutes depending on your internet connection.

Try right-clicking on the image above and choose “Save Target” to your local system.

Does anyone know if it’s possible to setup different brands within a single category?

    Thanks

    Hi Mark,

    This web site rocks!
You are to be commended on the content and generosity of information. I do prefer the downloadable versions and like Carol said I would lover to see the old ones produced this way.

I am a little slow to get going with my new site as my server caught on fire yesterday and it is still down but has been a blessing in a way as I found all this reading and listening today. So much to learn but you have made the process much easier. The BANS site is also well written for information on succeeding with a web site.

    Thanks again
    Kayleen

Whoops I meant love not lover!

Got something to say?
