Showing the Right Ads to the Right Visitors!

August 14, 2008

Late yesterday afternoon, I saw one of my websites featured in a front page article on the Reuters.com website! The article was written by a person who was explaining how you can make alot of money by using Build a Niche Store as a back-end to creating passive income. The site, www.GetaRaceCar.com, saw more than 2500 unique visitors from the article yesterday and today, it has already had more than 500 clicks! (as of 10am when I wrote this)

Using your Analytics to Identify Visitor Trends and Show the the Right Ads!

By identifying that someone was using that site as an example of the power of Build a Niche Store, I was able to take advantage of the referral URL and deliver a message that ONLY visitors from that link will see!

The plugin I use is called Referrer Message and here is how it works.

(Click to open larger view)

reuters.jpgI installed the plugin within WordPress and then used the setup screen to add the main domain of the referrer. in this case, Reuters.com.

After the referrer was set, I insert a custom message in BOTH boxes. One message for new visitors, and another message for those who may be returning a second time. After that was complete, I added the code to my index.php within the wordpress theme and placed it so the message would appear at the TOP of the main content section.

If you look in the message window, you can see I used a url of /bans.php to direct users who may want to buy Build a Niche Store directly from my example page. :-) Bans.php is just a bogus url I have setup in the redirect plugin, which redirect to my tracking page (to track the clicks) and then right on over to Build a Niche Store for them to buy it!

In total, I have used this method on more than 14 referrals over the past few weeks… all in the background to other visitors!

Go Ahead and Test it Out!

  1. Open a new Browser and type the domain into the box: www.getaracecar .com. Looks fairly normal right?
  2. This time, Click here to visit the site - you will notice I placed a little welcome message for visitors from this blog.
  3. Now visit this page on Reuters.com and click the link about halfway down the page… you will see the different message!

How do you target visitors?

Does that pseudo URL show in the SE’s search results?

Reuters reprinted a blog article that featured BANS with a couple of example sites and yours was one of them. Congrats. Too bad it was a site that got banned from Google. Looks like your hard at work - trying to get back into their index. I usually scrap the domain, let it sit or start over on another domain. But I understand you perseverance to succeed.

As much as I like BANS, I wish I could keep it all to myself and not share any of it - its that great. I wonder if those folks earning 7 figures as eBay affiliates are Fortune 500 type companies or actual individuals.

    @ Sean -

Thank you for the heads up on the url - time for a nofollow!

I know… a scrapped domain from Google! LOL I am hard at work to get it back into the engine though and honestly, even though it has been dropped, I still get 500+ visitors a day from the others!

I am on my second reinclusion request with the site and hope with more quality content, they will put it back sometime!! Alot of work went it in the beginning.

    Mark, congrats!

If anyone deserves to be on the cover of Reuters for a BANs site - it’s you!

I’m gonna take a look at that plugin, I can see it being an awesome tool in the WP toolbox.

    Thanks!

    Mark,

    Congratulations!!!

That’s just the push a google-dropped site needs.

I’m curious Mark. How did that article show up on Reuters? Do they randomly grab a feed from blogs to post on the site? I have sooooo much to learn!

    @ John -

It looked like someone had a press release done. The article is actually in other article directories also.

Did any of you notice this explanation of using BANS from the Reuters article?

“Basically, in the space of about 10 minutes (once you are familiar with how the software works) you can create a fully functional eBay affiliate website targeted to the niche market of your choice.”

10 minutes, huh? Boy, sure wish I knew that a year ago. Just think of all the time I could have saved had I realized it just takes 10 minutes per store… ; )

Mark, as great as it was to have your site targeted as an example, I think it would have been more beneficial to readers of the article to send them to this site.

    @ Rochelle -

LOL - I did read the article and wonder about it myself!!

The reason I didnt send them here though… I would rather they click on that little “Buy BANS Now” link in the special ad they see…

It is coded with my BANS affiliate link.

    Mark,

This is kinda “off topic”…but what type of template did you use on the GetARaceCar.com site? I LOVE the way it looks and how the blog is right down the center of the page.

    @ Eric -

I used the BANS-WordPress theme. Its likely the easiest of all and keeps the same look/feel as most of the bans templates.
