Interesting. Affiliate marketers could easily fall into the microsites category. Still it’s the quality of the content that counts, but getting found can be more difficult. Then it comes down to competition for those keywords. I’ve been working my ass off the past month with adding content and trying to rank for certain keywords, I hope the next update does some good. I’ve never worked at SEO before, this will be the true test.
Just because you have the exact .com domain name for the keyword you want to rank for doesn’t mean you’ll be number one in the search results every time.
Good video, good timing to post this, just as I’ve been increasing my SEO efforts. They make it seem easier than it is. You can have the best site in the world, but if no one is linking to it, it may neve be found.
I was struck by Matt’s comments on link farms where he illustrated a blog site with random postings containing outbound or backlinks. That site looked to me like something from a number of the blog networks that are being touted these days as a good way to get contextual backlinks. His implication is that these sorts of links don’t count.
I’m tempted to think that this may be another instance where Matt simply is trying to discourage a practice that actually does work. He’s been known to disseminate disinformation at conferences, etc., and I’m wondering if this falls in that court.
I should have said above that there is some good stuff in the video, especially the part about an apparent revival of a well crafted meta description as a good on-site SEO technique.
@Sean – Yeah, I got a lot from it as well Sean. Its always great to watch them talk about specifics on sites, to get an idea of where their head is.
I have helped several Realtors here in town, and to watch them pick apart a realtors site (Dup content, images, network drive content) and reiterate everything I continually say to my local accounts is at least refreshing.
@potentmix – I hear exactly what you are saying and it was actually that point in the video when I can over here and posted this!
I can say “Without Doubt” from very hard to swallow experience, blog farm networks like the one he talks about, still work! I have sites that get outranked by others, who use those exact link/blog post farms to gain more backlinks, in a shorter amount of time, and outrank you almost overnight!
Sure… my site may stand the test of time better, but its REAL easy to walk away from a bonifide great content site when you continually see a 10 page MFA site with 350 backlinks outranking you in under 5 days!
Makes the dark side look SO appealing!
