Spot the Niche - Can you find a Niche Market on a Car?

February 11, 2008

Starting today, Monday February 11th, I am going to begin a fun little weekly series called Spot the Niche! The purpose of this weekly post will be focused on How to Spot a Niche in everyday life! I will post my own images for the first few weeks, but after that, I am going to open it up to anyone on the web to submit pictures for the weekly Spot the Niche post!

A little while ago, a friend asked me to send him a picture of my car… so this weeks Spot the Niche photo comes from my driveway! How many Niche Product or Niche Market Websites can you find in the picture?

429 Roush Stage 3 Mustang

I will get things started on this niche market… keep in mind, I have not done ANY research on it, but this is a good starting point to get niche idea’s!

I Spy…

  • Mustangs
  • Performance Cars
  • High Performance Tires
  • Chrome Wheels and Rims
  • Replacement Fog-lights
  • Replacement Headlights
  • Xenon Light Kits
  • Fiberglass Body Kits
  • Replacement Mirrors
  • Car Detailing Kits (Yup, its a little dirty)
  • Hood Scoops
  • Car Covers

Now… How about the things that don’t JUMP out at you?

  • Radar Detectors
  • GPS Systems
  • Leather Seats
  • Stereo Equipment
  • In Dash DVD Players
  • Floor Mats
  • Performance Gauges

Also - Don’t forget the Background…

  • Chainsaws (Trees are kinda overgrown!)
  • Storage Buildings (Yes, they sell like heck on eBay)
  • Leaf Blower’s (Leaves on ground in background)

Comments are not only welcomed - they are encouraged! Tell me, what can YOU think of for Niche Markets associated with this photo?

OK, I’ll try - and this is hard!

    Car window tinting
    Car seat covers
Garage for the pretty car (not a big seller, but plays into the next one)
    Garage door openers
    Garage heaters
    Garage Mats
    Garage storage racks

    I’ll have to keep thinking…..

I’m Jealous - Nice Car. I’ll trade you my 6 year old Saturn for it - LOL.

Anyway, I own a Jeep and was It’s ironic that you say that about Cars. My deal closed today on JeepBumper.com - it was an expired domain name. I couldn’t believe how many jeep bumpers were on eBay and how many times it was searched for.

I’ve been doing the same thing, breaking things down into components and parts.

    How about ”?

    @ Kim and Sean -

You are both right on target with the methods of finding a niche market! They are ALL around our every day lives… we just don’t think or see them!

Sean - I only took that picture to see one specific car… the other side of my driveway has much older cars in it!!

I have always been a car nut - Driving is actually one of my favorite past times and whenever I get in a bad mood, will just drive for awhile! its great head time…. and having a good car to drive in just makes it that much more fun! Dont envy though… oil changes are $80 bucks a pop, and I cannot do it myself because I have yet to find a jack that fits under it! LOL

What about after market products for the exhaust to upgrade, turbo
for the engine and other related high performance parts. Different
    valve covers, maybe chrome.

There are alot of niches if you just look hard enought which I don’t
do. I seem to look at just the surface and not the whole picture.

This sure is a learning experience.

    Spot on Phil R!

Looking beneath the surface is priceless in niche discovery!

I had not even tought about the consumables associated with a car… Brakes, Clutch, etc.

    Mark,

I have a question that is directly related since your post is intended to generate ideas that are part of a larger niche which then lead to other niches, etc.

If you did several sites on somewhat related topics, would you link them to each other or would you consider that a bit of a distraction? Here is an example of how someone has linked multiple BANS sites together.

    http://www.guitarinstruments.com/

Notice the sites listed just under the date in the header. These are all on separate domains and all have a little bit of PR. While each of these 7 sites just links to the same sites, using the examples already started here, each site could technically have links to applicable sites that would not necessarily be the same with each site.

I can see both pros and cons to doing this but wondered from an SEO standpoint is this good or bad? From a shopper’s standpoint is this good or bad?

    how about:
    tire cleaners
    alarm systems
    wipers
    concrete paint
    headers
    engineparts:
    sparkplugs
    ignition systems
    wires
    air fresheners

Well, I’m afraid the only niche idea that came to me from this that hasn’t already been mentioned is cameras… Great exercise!

But, I do have a question. What is the small red dot above the left side of the hood?

    @ Cindy -

Otis, of this series, was talking to me today about a site he put up this past weekend, http://www.bestnfljersey.com .

I was telling him something to that exact point Cindy. Realistically, ALL of his categories are still large enough to break into their own niche sites!

At the bottom of each of the categories, next to the View More on Ebay link, could be something like: Search ThisTeamJerseys.com.

Then those sites could be team specific!

I will write a fairly indepth piece on 3-way linking when the time comes… as well as ways to get free articles for your site from experts in the field of your niche!

That is the stop sign at the end of the road! Good spotting!!

Great thinking about the camera also!!

If you want to keep it clean maybe soap, wax, brushes, bucket for
the water and cloth to wipe it off. How about a water hose also.

    Beautiful car, Mark!

I’ve done no research, but how about:

    Decals, emblems, pinstriping
    Car primer and paint
    Replacement grills
    Replacement radiators
    Replacement compressors for A/C
    Tune up kits
    Diagnostic equipment
    - like computer code readers
    Specialty tools for repairs
    Performance boosters
    Mustang Manuals by year

    For the garage:
Heaters - overhead hanging, infrared, wood or pellet stove, radiant floor heat
A/C - package unit, through the wall or window or fans
Hydraulic Floor lift kits - the ones like service garages have
Solves the problem of finding a floor jack to get under your car ;)

And don’t forget the fuzzy dice!

How about prepaid legal For speeding tickets…really small niche…or supercharger big ebay listing

  14. Sean on February 12th, 2008 4:15 pm

    Hey Cindy,

GuitarInstruments.com is one of my sites.

I took each top level musical instrument category and broke it into individual sites. I could have done several things, but it was an experiment. I have a small PPC Campaign for the guitar site and it gets run-off traffic to those other stores.

The link that is supposed to be the Build A Niche Store link was changed so that it points to a music instrument price comparison site that I put together.

I want to upgrade the guitar site, but because I have a PPC campaign running on it, I just haven’t had time.

I did the same linking concepts with some other themed sites - Fashion Accessories, Outdoor Sports and Power Sports. When I did the Power Sports stores I relocated the links to the very top of the header. I see some of the top retailers linking to their other stores. As long as I don’t over do the links, I think it is a good technique.

I am looking forward to reading Mark’s column, later on down the road, in regards to the link strategy.

Mark - I am a newbie (on everything), have been working on my first Niche store for a couple of weeks, then a couple of days ago found out about your series. Great, I will follow it for sure. Anyway, I just got to the last page of the MANUEL, so what happens now. Do I have to do anything to publish to the Web? Thanks.

  16. Mark on February 12th, 2008 5:24 pm

Great work by everyone on this weekly Spot the Niche post!!

Has anyone researched any of the possibilities and found any new niche markets to pursue?

    @ Richard -

Thanks for following along! There is a post from last year where I did a basic series on this same subject, it may be good to review the entire series (read it only) and get a jump on next week!

    Hey Sean,

I really like your site and I like the linking concept. Do you get very much flow-through traffic to your other themed-group sites that are linked like this?

I actually found your site through a forum where someone pointed it out as a great example of the potential that BANS has but that most people don’t bother maximizing. You obviously know a lot about coding and tweaking the inner workings of a website and I hope you’ll share some of that along the way. I have yet to use a banner in my header (my niches so far haven’t cooperated in this respect - some merchants don’t provide enough decent banners) but I would like to know how to get them to rotate.

    Keep up the good work!

    Cindy

    …and don’t forget:

    Driving gloves
    Sunglasses
    Fast driving music on CDs
    Dashboard figure

WHEW! Finally got caught up on the Empire Series…so glad I didn’t let it get away from me, even if I’m just following along.

I’ve got three BANS sites and haven’t done very well with seeing much money yet…they’ve been up almost three months, so I’m being patient.

Had to try my hand at the Spot the Niche…

    Trunk organizer
    Automobile First Aid Kit
    Auto Emergency Kit
    Custom License Plate Frame
Those cool lights that glow under the cars at night
    Steering wheel covers
    Custom gear shift knobs

    Okay, enough playtime…back to work!

    Fix Or Repair Daily
    Found On Road Dead

    HAHA!
    I kid, nice looking ride!
