Spring Fever and What it Means to Website Builders

It’s a beautiful day in Charlotte today! Looks like we will reach into the 60′s as far as the temps go, and it already has me thinking about playing hookie and spending the day cleaning my car! I know, shame on me! :-)

What it REALLY means to anyone who is site building, is that its time to get in front of the spring and summer seasonal trends our own niche markets tell us will be popular! I know, some of you are staring at the screen right now with a do-what look on your faces… so let me try to explain.

Last week, I wrote about how you can use your logfiles to find content ideas – this week, I am going to focus on using free tools provided by Google!

Using Google Insights to Spot Trends

Google insights is just another nifty little tool that Google gives us to research and optimize our web efforts. If you have never used insights before, you’re missing out on a great tool that helps you plan site content, based on what people have typically looked for over several years – aka Search Trends.

I have several sites in the home hvac market. In the winter months, anything related to heat drives traffic, in the summer… yup, anything related to cooling. Along with air conditioners and furnaces, there is a whole array of other products that demand attention!

Humidifiers, Dehumidifiers, Thermostats, Air Purifiers… I could go on and on… but instead, I will just use those as an example of which I want to focus on RIGHT NOW, based on when they are popular.

  1. Go to Google Insights
  2. Compare by – Search terms
  3. Terms – humidifier, dehumidifier
  4. Filters:  Web Search, USA, 2004-Now, All Categories.
  5. Link

The chart shows me that “dehumidifiers” are MUCH more popular than “humidifiers” in the coming months…

Other Examples

While the humidifier / dehumidifier difference makes sense to me because I know the market already, there are several that I really don’t have a clue what will be popular.  Using insights to dig through your own topics will help weed through the chaff and find the most probable areas you should focus in the coming months.

Common sense goes a long way to helping you stay in front of trends – but having  Google tools and raw trend data to back it up, helps you find gems you may have missed.

Cool car. Ever since I found your site a year and a half ago I told myself I was going to make this internet thing happen so I would not need a car. Today marks month 9 of not owning a car. Its weird living in the Motor City and riding my bike in 15 degrees weather to the grocery store, but it works.

I’ll have to look at the Google Insights.

Don’t know if you’ve ever seen it, but the Wonder Wheel on Google search is pretty helpful. Just search for something in Google, click “Show Options on the results page, then click “Wonder Wheel” (you’ll find it about midway down on the left-hand side). Insights is very good, obviously, but this Wonder Wheel thing is something I keep going back to.

@Brad – Glad to hear you are doing good Brad! I am about to break out the bike and get started down that road myself now… :-)

@Brian – The wonder wheel is GREAT! ANY time I need an idea or another route to go, I spin it up!
