The Best Way I Found to Increase Productivity

Recently, Rochelle from Niche Store Strategies, asked me how I manage to stay organized and focused on tasks… One of the things I told her that has helped me with productivity more than ANYTHING was the addition of a second monitor to my development PC. I don’t exactly recall when it was, but at some point 6-7 years ago, I got my first system with a 2-head graphics card, meaning, it can drive or run, 2 monitors side by side, so I picked up a second 17″ monitor and plugged it in! Since that time, I have never turned back and with each PC upgrade, I have swapped to larger monitors.

As many of you know, the biggest headache you face when doing your research or ANY other task that requires you to get into 3-4 websites at one time… is the constant minimizing of windows. How many times have you inadvertently closed one window and had to deal with going back to login in all over again? It’s a pain in the butt!

Although there is nothing on the screen in this picture, I have (2) 24″ HP Widescreen monitors running on the system. How does that help you ask?

As you can see in the above image, instead of having a 1024 x 768 single monitor, these 24 inch widescreen monitors run at 1920 x 1200 each, providing a total desktop area of more than 3800 pixels wide! That extra real estate allows me to open 4 windows across the full display and simply click in and out of each window as I work, there is no minimize, no maximize window etc. In the image above, you can see that on the left, I have Wordtracker open, next to it, the Hybrid Golf website, GoDaddy to the right and then my cPanel to the far right. Its as if everything can be done from a single browser page… versus having to open and close different windows just to copy and paste!

The monitors are, HP 2408H, Vivid Color monitors… even having just one of these things will greatly increase your productivity due to all the extra workspace on the wide screen. They sell for about $450-$500, which is very reasonable for an HD monitor this size! If you have ever seen a Mac monitor with the solid glass facing on it, the images and really EVERYTHING, just looks so much crisper… these units have the same hardshell glass face on them. In a rare moment of shopping, I actually went to the store and compared several monitors before deciding on these.

When you are considering your next PC upgrade… consider looking at a system that will support (2) or more monitors. It may sound like overkill right now, but in the end, your productivity will almost double on everything you use your PC for!

    Hello Mark,

Having two monitors is nice and I’ve heard of people that say it does indeed increase production; for people who for some reason can’t have two monitors: you can consider upgrading to IE 7 or Firefox 5, they both have tabs and it so much easier to use it than all this countless windows.

I usually have two-three windows open, one for my stores (one that I’m working, one existing, the one I’m working on in admin mode, and an existing one in admin); one for monitoring (cj, google analyzer, my hostgator cpanel); and one for research: google, wikipedia, and all other stuff. Very convenient.

    Cheers,
    Mik

    Mik,

I totally agree with you. I’ve been using tabs on IE and Firefox for at least a year now and can’t imagine getting along without them. For those who use tabs make sure you add some type of crash recovery addon or plugin.

    Hi,

    This is a great post.

I’ve seen double monitors on my customers desks at companies
    I do service work for.

I never realized how productive they could be.
