The End of an Costly Revolution!

October 1, 2008

Free Revolution ThemeIn 30 short days… the Insanely Popular Revolution Themes by Brian Gardner will be Free!

Apparently, there has been a bit of gray area discussion over the usage of custom themes with WordPress, since it was released under GPL license. In my nightly travels, I ran across this post at the Blog Herald and they have posted, and Brian confirmed, as of October 31st at midnight, the Revolution Themes currently available, will no longer exist!

It only took a few short clicks to find the info on Brians site as well:

As of 12:00 midnight, Friday October 31st, the themes that are currently available at the Revolution theme site will no longer be available. Ever. This was a decision that I made in order to protect the integrity of the current themes and the conditions under which they were released.

Free Revolution Theme will be Open Source

One thing Brian confirms is that along with a new partner in his venture, the existing buyers of the Revolution themes will be fully supported going forward. In addition, part of the reasoning behind this choice, was to limit the market on the current themes. It sounds to me that the new themes will NOT be the same as those we currently love!

BANS WordPress Revolution Themes

I have worked with MANY of you on a personal level and have several BANS sites using the Revolution theme as well. It took a bit of hacking to get it all working properly, but those of you with the modified BANS WordPress themes know just how perfect and professional the final result is! If any of you want to post the links to this post and share with others… feel free to do so.

If anyone else even thought about using the Revolution Themes for their sites - you have until the end of this month, to purchase them. After Oct 31st, they are no longer being sold!

Wow! That is awesome. The Revolution themes are incredible. I don’t have one currently, but look forward to the release as Open Source. That is going to be cool.

Man, what will the next generation look like. I am sure it is going to be off the hook for real!

    Mark,

I am confused by this post. Is Brian going to take the Revolution theme off the market or make it open source?

    @ Fred,

My understanding is he is going to do an “Design overhaul” of the Revolution themes for the Open Source versions. He is doing this to try NOT to dilute the value of the original Revolution Themes that many have paid a good price to buy.

I am looking forward to see what he does with this next incarnation of the Revolution Themes!

Executive decision time. Buy the existing theme and compliment it with the Chimera theme. One good thing about it, is anything you have that is different that someone else or another site is a good thing.

I know I contacted Mark awhile back about this theme, I’ve just haven’t gotten around to do my “to do” list.

Wander what the thoughts about this are: Current owners like the idea or not, wished they didn’t buy or glad they did: anybody recommending?

    @ Sean - \

I have the developer pack for Rev and truly LOVE it!

I think the limitation is for various reasons, but I get the drift that it has something to do with Creative Commons as well.

The new themes will likely be VERY good, but I understand by reading… they will be different than the original rev themes, thus keeping the value of them intact.

I don’t get it….no longer exist doesn’t mean to be free, does it? or are you saying that there will be no more new revolution theme while the existing ones are free?

    @ Yan -

He is making a NEW set of themes to replace the current revolution themes… the NEW ones will be free, or open source.

The new open source themes will be somewhat different than the existing ones… from what I understand, but nonetheless, will be freely available.

I am sure the next set is going to be amazing. That makes sense to change up the current theme that is going Open Source because I would be pissed if I bought it and then it was just released to everyone.

I am sure that it is going to be solid anyway.

I just read about this last night before I went to bed - and though Revolution is a widely talked about platform for building some serious sites.. there are quite a few themes out that have been free for a while that I’ve used time and time again..

    But I’m still excited! ;)

@Sean - it has nothing to do with Creative Commons and everything to do with GPL - read my post here for more info.

I’m surprised more aren’t talking and blogging about this as it signals the death of pay-for premium themes for the most part.

Got something to say?
