The Foundation of Building a Niche Store Empire in 12 Weeks!

February 1, 2008

As I mentioned in my Niche Store Builder February Goals post, I am starting a new series at The Niche Store Builder, Build a Niche Store Empire in 12 Weeks! This series will focus on a very specific methodology you can follow each week, to build a Niche Store Empire that will generate income for years to come! This is not only going to be an exciting series to watch and follow, but I am also choosing a small group of 10 participants that will guest-blog about their experiences along the way. At the end of the 12 week period, everyone reading this series will be armed with the tools and knowledge to develop their own BANS Affiliate Empire!

The series itself will include a new weekly chapter that details the following:

  1. Introduction to BANS and the Participants in the series.
  2. Print Build a Niche Store Blueprint
    Choosing your Niche
    Researching your Niche Part 1
Researching your Niche Market Part 2
Registering a Domain for your first Niche Store
Signing up for various affiliate accounts you will need for success
Week 2 Summary - Prepare for week 3
  3. Obtaining the BANS Software
Installing to your hostgator hosting account
    loading your first niche store.
    (The indexing begins)
  4. Determining the Basics of your Main Categories
Setting a Sitewide Search Term to Narrow Products to your Niche Market
    Completing your Main Store Categories
  5. Installing Sitemap MOD to your first BANS store that promote deep indexing,
Develop an INBOUND link strategy to make sure your Niche Store is indexed!
Immediately Start Developing a New Site (or 10)
  6. Customizing your store with a custom template
Custom graphics, and the flexibility to use the template on multiple stores.
  7. Taking your existing work and building a skeleton to install on your hosting account, which makes the launch of every additional site a 5 minute process!
  8. Reviewing your first full month of logfiles and determining areas that need attention. What to do about those areas!
  9. Panel review of ALL members websites, each participant will be asked to review one of the others website to uncover areas for improvement as well as learning from each other through the areas that are a success.
  10. PPC Discussed in detail… Pros and Cons
  11. Repeating what you learned in a highly streamlined and effective manner, to launch 1 new site every other day!
  12. Reviewing logfiles at the second full month, reviewing the differences from the first month, and what to do about ongoing care and maintenance of your BANS Empire!

As of today - I already have a group of 5-6 ALL people chosen to participate and they will be receiving emails from me asking if they are interested in being a part of the BANS Empire Series. This leaves 4-5 additional openings for ANYONE who wants to be a part of this series! As a participant, they will receive a guest login and password to this site where they will outline what they have done each week in conjunction with the weekly guidance I am going to be providing and we will share and learn from each other along the way. A few important facts about the participants:

  • Several are already BANS Owners.
  • A few have NEVER even heard of BANS, they are outside contacts on other forums.
  • Few of the participants have any web development experience other than what they know about BANS.
  • One or two ARE family members of my own that want to become independent of their day jobs.
  • Each person MUST commit to at least 1 post per week in regard to what they are doing on their own sites.
  • Each person MUST commit to spending at least 1 hour each day on their site work, 5 days a week.
  • Everyone must be willing to talk about their Niche Sites and post links accordingly.
  • As much as I hate to say, there is a small investment for BANS, Domain names, Hosting. If you already have those… you are golden! If not, BANS is $97.00 (One time, unlimited websites) Domain Names through GoDaddy are about $8.00 each/year (With a discount code :-) ) and hosting is $7.95/Month for unlimited websites through HostGator. (Read more below)

Overall, through the entire process… if you are starting right now with nothing, you will need to invest the following:

  • Week #2 - $8.00 for your first domain (Total $8.00)
  • Week #3 - $7.95 for Hostgator account, $97.00 for BANS, $8.00 for a second domain name. (Total $112.95)
  • Weeks 4-11 - $8.00 per week for a new weekly niche site domain name.(Total $64.00)
  • Anything you spend beyond that amount is up to you… I will be talking about several additional tools that make this process easier, but I will also include several FREE options that can help as well.

I will include links to the various places in my posts… and it is safe to assume these links WILL have my own affiliate codes embedded in them. If you want to buy through my own links, that is completely up to you but definitely not required! If you wish to purchase direct or through someone else you are welcome to do so as well.

The ultimate goal of this series is going to be showing and writing about how ANYONE, regardless of experience, can learn the in’s and out’s of BANS to succeed. Along the way, everyone will pick up bits and pieces of knowledge about the basics of search engine optimization, link building, html, graphics work, and overall marketing of their niche websites.

At the end of this series (12 weeks) you will have a “minimum” of 10 websites fully optimized and beginning to earn revenue for you! If you choose to develop more than 10… you will simply accelerate the process of substantial residual income with minimum time investment, that just keeps on giving! I am not going to sit here and tell you that every website will be a huge success, its just not that easy. What I will say however, if you follow the outlined steps and commit to performing the recommended techniques, your chance toward success is much higher! To date, I still only have about 12-15 fully developed BANS sites myself… I have been sidetracked by outside events in my personal life that has put development on hold. The 12-15 sites I do have, earned $1740.00 in Nov 07, and $2290.00 in Dec 07, between the BANS program and Adsense, just 6 months after launching my first one. Several have already achieved pagerank in Google and most can be found in the top 20 of search results on various engines for targeted terms! Getting high amounts of traffic is not as important as getting low to moderate amounts of highly targeted traffic!

I know those earnings are not enough to support many households… but if you were to take what you learn and impose the methodology into 50 or 100 niche sites, you can imagine the earnings potential in less than 1 year!

Many people have asked WHY am I doing this when I could just be developing our own sites and achieve our goals quicker. The answer is really simple… I bore easy… Talking about what I am doing, while at the same time, leading a group of people down a path to success is what always gets me going! Besides… I WILL be developing 10-20 of my own sites as part of this process at the same time! :-)

Although some of the information in this series will be duplicated from the earlier process series, the steps of completing certain tasks will be much more detailed in order to ease the process and secure ythe beginnings of our entire empire! With each new weekly section, there will also include a few good resources for the following weeks activities so you can get a jump start on the action if you choose!

In addition to the weekly chapters, you will be registering a NEW domain every week starting in week 2 and applying everything you learned in the previous weeks to that new site. All while you continue modeling your existing site(s) with the process in the current weeks chapter.

Edit 02/03/2007: The group of participants has been chosen. Please review the next post.

So… there it is. Are YOU ready to follow along or do you prefer to be a participant? Please read through the requirements above one more time and if you want to be a guest participant in this series, reply via the contact page with the answers to following questions:

  • High Speed Internet: Yes/No
  • Current BANS Owner: Yes/No
  • Able to commit to one post each week: Yes/No
  • ANY html or web experience at all: Yes/No
  • Ready to build the foundation of your own Internet niche store empire: Yes/No

  5. Alice on February 2nd, 2008 5:24 pm

Awesome! I’ve been doing BANS since November and have several sites already. I also have a backlog of domain names for new stores that I need to get set up, and would love to be in the study. But if I don’t get in, I’ll still follow along and get more sites going.

This is a great offer to help structure things for those of us who kind of know what’s going on, but aren’t as disciplined or efficient as we could be… ;-)

    Thanks Mark!

This is a great initiative! Looks like there’s something there for BANSers of every level, from total tyro to near professional. I like it when there are useful things to be learned!

    Be well,

    Jaap Verduijn.

  16. John Burbridge on February 8th, 2008 5:55 am

I have already attempted to set up a site and failed so this series will be a massive aid to getting it up and running, along with a few others. I’m looking forward to receiving this much needed instruction.

    Thanks

I bought the BANS package a while ago and it is sitting there gathering digital dust still in it’s zip file!

This is a great kick start to get me going.

Any idea of how much time per day the project will take?

  18. Sheila on February 8th, 2008 6:01 am

Sounds great. I have 5 BANS sites, but so far have made only 68pence on CJ. I would love to learn how to increase my earnings and am looking forward to following along with your chosen participants.

  19. Cathy Yeatts on February 8th, 2008 6:25 am

I’d love to join this group. Already have several BANS sites but they are only generating small amounts of income. I knew I was missing something in the puzzle but couldn’t figure it out.

I’m in…if you still have space available.

Thanks so much for doing this.

    Mark,

You are offering a fantastic gift to BANS users. Helping us to focus and organize ourselves is priceless. Have you seen Dennis Becker’s $5 Bucks a Day system? Your efforts will fit in nicely with his philosophy, I think.

Thank you and all the best,

  24. Steve Henderson on February 8th, 2008 6:56 am

I have one BANS site, subsidiary to a content site in the same niche which should feed the BANS site with qualified traffic.

For future sites I won’t have that luxury and will have to drive SEO traffic directly. I can do that - but at a cost. (I have paid access to trusted backlinks).

The decision of whether the return is worth the effort (BANS dev) and cost (SEO links rental) depends on what range of order value and conversion rates might reasonably be expected of a competently set up BANS site in a keyword researched niche?

Can you offer any guidance or experience on that?

  25. heasymo on February 8th, 2008 6:59 am

    hello Mark,

Too bad I only saw your post about the 12 week series today..
I definately want to participate because I own 2 Bans stores for several months now without ANY succes.

I want to work hard to change that and to get proof that BANS can work for me too..

    A Bans-owner from Belgium

  26. Diana de Avila on February 8th, 2008 7:56 am

This is such an awesome offering. i am looking forward to following the series.

    Thank you Mark!

  27. Mark on February 8th, 2008 8:06 am

@ Cathy - Unfortunately, the group is already in place. Dont let that hold you back from following along and commenting or asking questions along the way though!

@ Steve Henderson - Conversion rates are very much determined by the niche as well as the reach of the site itself. I run a CJ banner ad on every site to measure traffic at the CJ level as well as my own tracking measures. I have some sites that convert in the 30% range due to a low cost product in high demand… other sites, convert at less than 10%, but offer higher sales price with each sale.

We will be discussing these various measures in a future segment…

    Mark

  28. Richard on February 8th, 2008 8:11 am

Well - Mark - I am a complete newbie. I only know how to do email and cruise a little on Internet before. Boy have I learned a lot in last 2 Weeks.
I was doing well on my first Store - working on it every day -then got stalled out because I wanted to change my logo - but could not find out how. So I emailed Kevin and Adam and they sent me to you.
Due to my limited knowlege, I better just follow along. But I am really EXCITED about this opportunity. Can we email you with questions if we have any? For instance, how do I delete the logo image and subsitute another? Thanks.

  29. Ted Sudol on February 8th, 2008 8:15 am

Sounds like a great course. I’ll be following along, however if a participant spot opens up please contact me.

  30. Carol on February 8th, 2008 8:55 am

    Hi Mark,

I found BANS in Nov 2007 and have been obsessed with it ever since. I thought that I knew what I was doing but I have been able to set up only 2 awful stores. My learning curve on this project would circle the globe. I would have loved to be a participant in this course.

I will be following along. This sounds like the chance that I have needed.

  31. Curtis on February 8th, 2008 9:29 am

    Hi,

Will this plan work for the up coming new bans in beta? Thanks
    Curtis

  32. Mark on February 8th, 2008 9:46 am

    @ Curtis -

Sure will… Not only will it work for BANS, it works on ANY type of website! From 1 page to 1000 pages!

Although… much of the focus will be discussing success with BANS, it can be applied to any site.

    Mark

  33. Edy on February 8th, 2008 10:07 am

    Mark

I just received email about this post today. It seems I am late to take a place for your plan. I am BANS owner and get few income from bans.
I’d like to participate in your program. Anyway, if there is any spot left, please let me in.

How if I still want to learn about increasing commission using BANS?
I really interested in your plan

    Edy

  34. Profit Boss on February 8th, 2008 10:07 am

    Hi Mark,

Sounds like a great idea on getting to know just how to properly set up and run a Bans site. It’s all in the numbers folks. The more sites you can set up and promote the better chance you have of something sticking. I’m ready to set up a bunch so I will be following along closely. Good luck to everyone joining in.

I’ve connected to my website via CuteFTP and uploaded my BANS files to the public_html folder.

In the right hand, I then opened my public_html folder, and I can see all the files I’ve uploaded. I then open the folder - public_html. Once I’ve done this, in the Close Pane Prompt - It states if I want to break the current connection, so I say yes.

Then I click on the icon, which states URL - type in my website address: http://www.computerbargains4sale.com.
After saying yes,In the right hand pane a folder appears displaying pub, (public files), size:4.00, attributes: drwxr-xr-x

But nothing happens, no BANS installation screen appears.

    Sorry, can you help.

    With Regards

Mark I am on page 16 of the BANS manual still trying to see the website. It says to type in the URL, but I get “TEST PAGE” when I type in http://www.mymusicposters.net which is my domain name. Is this because it has not propegated yet? Please advise. Thx.

    Hi,
I’m trying to understand the marketing of the BANS site a bit better, as I would have thought the most difficult part of this would be getting buyers to your new BANS site. The only indication I see from the outline regarding getting traffic is Step 10.

I’m not bagging the program, but is PPC the only recommended means for site promotion? Or am I missing something?

Also, wouldn’t you want to focus on building one site thats starts making money before moving on to build a new one?

Sorry, but I think I just need more clarification here.

    Thanks,
    Rob

    1) Why do you start building new bans sites before promoting the ones you already built? e.g. Step 5 before Step 10?

    2) So is PPC the primary means for promotion?

  71. Mark on March 11th, 2008 8:56 am

    @ Rob -

Good questions… The method I am using to build a BANS empire is by taking the organic SEO route versus having to use PPC to drive traffic.

As you walk through the different sections of the series, you will see that SEO and menu optimization comes first, then some inbound links, then off to another site.

Essentially, you get a site to a point of being indexed and move on to another new BANS site. Get the second site to the indexing point, rinse and repeat.

After sites are being indexed, you return to them 1 hour a week and optimize a second category, move to your second, third, fourth etc…

You are building the foundation of long term, sdearch optimized sites that will deliver long term growth and income, versus paying for traffic that stops when you stop paying.

Makes sense. Thanks for clarifying, Mark.

Thanks very much for setting up this tutorial.
I found you through the bans forum. My sites are doing nothing, purely because I put more effort into the aesthetics than seo.
Looking forward to implementing your ideas.
My job is doing my head in and I really want to make this work, and to prove everyone who says it can’t be done, wrong.

Mark, Is there a way to force “clicks” on a Google Adsense ad to open in a new browser window? It would be nice to have the “niche site” still there when they close the Google ad window. Thanks!

  85. Mark on May 2nd, 2008 9:49 am

    @ John -

I’m sure there are some hidden secrets to Google adsense that would allow it, but you would probably do so at risk of the Google terms of service (I have not read them about opening in new window tho)

I think you will find in the longrun… google adsense is not the best way to add extra money making links on the sites anyhow… they start out strong and fizzle to pennies after 30-60 days….

Hey Mark, what ads do you find that convert on your sites? I find that I haven’t found any banner ads outside of google that convert (even if only a small amount). I have several sites and have tried amazon and any number of banner ads from CJ without so much as a click.

  87. John on May 3rd, 2008 4:25 am

Thanks for the prompt response Mark! Does that answer imply that you don’t use Google ads?

I suppose the better choice would be site-specific ads such as BANS, HostGator, and WordTracker. Things that are useful in developing the site. Or, affiliate ads that are “topical” to the site.

Also, thanks for providing all the valuable info on your site. I’ve enjoyed reading it and discovering new “directions” to go.

  88. Tyler Michael Jonsson on May 7th, 2008 1:38 am

I have used all of the information on this site to launch my first BANS site (Linked to this posting).

I have learned so much I feel like my head is about to explode. But at the same time I am very optimistic for the future of using BANS niche sites to make a bit of cash… Even a few hundred bucks a month would really help a starving actor college kid out a lot :)

I bought BANS through the affiliate link here as a sign of my appreciation for the incredibly helpful content you give out!

Keep it up, I look forward to following in your footsteps!
