Update Build a Niche Store 3.0 to 3.0 EPN

April 4, 2008

This is the first of 3-4 instructional posts on updating your Build a Niche Store sites to the new 3.0 EPN version. The video itself is about 15-16 minutes long, but you can do these updates in about 5-10 minutes per site, including the tests to make sure the campID variable is passing to the new eBay network.

For the purpose of this video it is assumed:

  • Your ORIGINAL store was already 3.0 (not a 2.0 that was upgraded to 3.0 in the past)
  • Your current site is working fine
  • You have enrolled and been accepted to the eBay Partner Program
  • You have created a Campaign ID within the eBay partner management section

Click on the image below to view the walk-through video.

Upgrade BANS 30 to 30EPN

Should you run into problems during the upgrade, please post your experiences below.

I followed the video and updated my site with the EPN update files (my bans is showing version 3.0EPN), and added my campaign id to my site but I don’t see the camp id in the url at the bottom when I hover over a link. I do have cloaking turned off. Did I do something wrong?

(By the way, I’m really enjoying this series. The videos and the info are awesome!)

    Rhonda,

Same thing happened to me. As I was going to ask you if your url started with rover.ebay , because mine didn’t and didn’t show my campid, I went to check to see what the url started with on my store item and now it is working. The difference for me was that I shut my browser down and re-launched it. try that.

I was also a bit ticked and walked away for awhile and BAM when I came back it was all good!

    Mark,

My first site worked exactly as it was supposed to! Woohoo! That one had no traffic so I did it first. Now I’m going to do one that does have traffic (fingers crossed!)

How are things for an upgraded v2.0 site different from an original v3.0?

Hello, Ive been observing this for several weeks now….Is ANYONE making any money at running BANS sites??? Im not trying to be critical but….Ive yet to see that anyone has made anything beyond their original investment except for those sample BANS sites offered in the BANS advertisement. Michael

  5. Mark on April 6th, 2008 9:47 am

    @ Michael -

I begin making money on sites within the first 30 days of launch… it begins as a trickle and slowly increases as each week passes.

I will let others post their experience as well.

It is really about the level of modification you do on your site…

BANS out of the Box: Little or No Earnings
BANS with category research and customization: Mild to Moderate earnings.

BANS with full menu optimization, EVERY page title, keywords, descriptions, different that the out of the box method, inbound links, marketing articles, etc…

Well… thats where the money is!

    Hello Mark,
    Thank you for the video,
You have mentioned before that you can’t change your sitemap in v3, but I went ahead and did it anyway. Guess what - it worked just fine. May be it was an issue with the first issue of v3? But nevertheless, I just deleted my old sitemap, renamed my new one into what old was (including the file name and page name), checked it on google (i did a previous search and for some terms my sitemap was returned), and it worked just fine. So, are you sure you have to do all this permanent redirection rather than rename you new sitemap?

    Thanks,
    Mik

  9. Mark on April 6th, 2008 10:54 pm

    @ Mik -

You are correct, the old sitemap is actually the same code as the version 3 sitemap. The reason for the redirect… is that search engines already have http://www.mydomain .com/my-old-sitemap in the search index… so when they return and dont find it, you end up with 404 errors.

Now that I think about though… you can just make it inactive and they will still find it.

    Hi
I am having the same question as Cindy. How are things for an upgraded v2.0 site different from an original v3.0?

I have not yet started converting my sites into the new EPN versions because most of my sites are v.2 sites upgradet to v.3 and I am not sure which upgrade file I should use..

    Thanks
    Ronni

  11. JeffLeft on April 7th, 2008 12:31 pm

I think it was Rochelle that I asked this question once before. It was about where our commisions come from. Example: If someone clicks on one of our sites and clicks on an item, it leaves a cookie for 7 days, unless they wipe the cookies or visit another affiliate. Then if they buy ANTHING from ANYWHERE on Ebay, even unrelated to your site, you get commision. I didn’t realize this for a long time.
With the new Reports from Ebay that we can get.. Even if we are showing bids on a particular campaign, there’s really no way of knowing if that person is buying an item from your store or an unrelated item and you are showing a bid because of the cookie??
    Any thoughts on this?

  12. JeffLeft on April 9th, 2008 7:22 am

If anyone else was wondering.. I was curious about the report and how the bids were showing.. I had 9 bids and 3 wins.. I didn’t know if the 9 bids were “current” bids or total bids including everything.. Here’s what Ebay emailed me..

“In your example, the 3 winning bids should be included in your 9 bids. The 9 bids would be comprised of any winning bids, won bids, losing bids or lost bids. BINs (Buy it Now’s) are also included in both metrics. “

    @ Jeff -

I asked them the same question after you asked it here… still waiting on an answer! LOL Glad they got yours answered… I wont wait any longer!!

    Thanks for the info!

Aloha! I’m a new member to this forum so please forgive me if I do anything inappropriately.

    @Ronni

Ronnie, I have the same concern that you have. I updated my v2.0 store to v3.0 and did what Mark said to correct his Sitemap MOD to avoid the 404 Errors. However, I am waiting to see if a v3.0 updated store is “ready” for a v3.0EPN Update.

I’ve been searching this website and found nothing. Maybe I just don’t know how to search…:(

    Mahalo for any help!

    @ Michael

I started building BANS sites using Mark’s system at the beginning of February - I now have six that have made $20 altogether (four out of the six sites are making money - the two that aren’t are the last two I built). I started making money within a couple of weeks of building the sitesI am following Mark’s process step-by-step and don’t have any fancy templates or anything yet - just the standard template with keyword optimization. I did niche research to make sure they would “fly” and I know how to do keyword research - again, if you follow the plan you should do well.

    Good luck!

    @ Charles -

Form my own experience… the 3.0 updates are working fine. It is only when you go from one version tot he newest that I have experienced any issues… and those were my own fault! Doh!

I finally updated the rest of my stores last night and am happy to say they ALL went smoothly. What a relief! Now I just have to go back and change any rogue banners and text links hanging out there, and then I’ll be totally done with this. Thank goodness this kind of thing doesn’t happen very often!

    @ Michael -

I built my first store around christmas. Looking at it now, it was a bit of a fiasco, but it was a starting point. Built 8 stores in january, before I knew what I was doing. Not customized, poorly optimized, no inbound links. Have built over a dozen since this series began, but those ‘good’ sites are mostly less than 30 days old. One thing I did do right was to customize pages. I didn’t do EVERY page like I do now, but I still did a lot. At any rate, made $20 bucks in Jan, $40 in Feb and $200 in March. A nice upward trend so far, I’d say. =)

    @ Mark:

Thank you very much for taking time out of your BUSY life to address my concern. I will proceed w/ updating my v3.0 Update store w/ v3.0 EPN Update [does that sound confusing or is it just me:)]

If anyone asks me where’s the best place to learn about BANS, I will direct them to this site! (and hopefully they’ll buy via your site). Thanks again for sharing all your knowledge and ESPECIALLY the videos. Very helpful!

    Aloha, Charles

    Hi Mark

Firstly, thank you for the fantastic videos - it makes it all so much easier to understand when I can see you demonstrating what you are talking about.

I have successfully downloaded your videos to Real Player as I’ve been going through the course. However, I have have now come to the Camtasia videos and I cannot get any of them to download properly. They are downloading only the first few seconds of the video. Any idea why this might be?

    Thanks.
    Denise

  21. Mark on April 17th, 2008 10:01 am

    @ Denise -

At one point I changed over to using a hosted solution of my own versus the Google Video hosting. The new videos are 1024×768 and much higher quality, but work as a flash video.

I dont know if realplayer will play them or not.

Got something to say?
