Week in Review and the Week Ahead

July 14, 2008

Last week, I started posting a weekly review of not only what I have posted, but what I will be posting about in the coming week. All can be tracked in the Weekly Review category of posts.

First and foremost, I think my Flu is gone! Last week, I was still on the tail end of it… but it finally departed for good about mid week and I feel on top of the world again! Another key milestone for the past week was that I made the Top 100 blogs list over at Marks 45n5.com site, settling at #93!

I also received great feedback this week from several readers regarding the way I do the video walkthroughs and the length of the videos. First, if I am going to provide written direction on a process AND release a video of that process, I should try to follow the steps in chronological order! Sounds like an easy thing… but when I recorded the BANS Flex installation video, I skipped around the directions versus following them. From that point, all videos will follow written direction as well to make it easier for you all to understand!

The next bit of feedback was on video length and how 23 minutes can be long for those who may be busy! I agree… What I am starting to do at this point is first, trying to reduce the length of the videos, breaking them into shorter versions when possible. Second, I will post the video length at the top of the posts. That way, if you see ahead of time a video is 15 minutes long, you have the option of watching it at a more convenient time.

Thanks to everyone who comments and provides feedback… I do read and take them to heart!

Niche Store Builder Week in Review

Installing WordPress through your HostGator Account July 8, 2008

In support of building WordPress/BANS integrated sites, this short 8 minute video walks you the process of adding a WordPress blog platform to your site through your cPanel and Fantastico!

Installing Build a Niche Store in a Site Folder July 8, 2008

Along the same lines as the above post, this 5.5 minute video post walked through the process of installing your niche store into a sub-directory or folder of your site. I was very surprised at how many emails I received from folks who were unaware you could even put BANS into a folder!

Using Google AdWords Tool with WordTracker to Create Targeted Content July 9, 2008
Google Gives Back - with Real Search Volume Numbers! July 9, 2008

Both posts above, reference the new data Google is now showing in the AdWords Sandbox tool! If you have heard yet, Google is now showing actual numbers next to the search volume, versus that tiny green bar we have all seen in the past!

Installing the BANS/Flex Template July 9, 2008

This 23 minutevideo taught me something about the way we integrate BANS and wordpress! It has to be easier! After going through this video myself, I realized it must be overwhelming for some readers who really are not that deep, and don’t care to get that deeply involved, in page code! Everyone (including myself) prefers drop and go templates that work out of the box!

I wish it could be that easy… but since we are using two different platforms, its just not. What I can do however, is work to make the process as easy as possible for everyone to do! Which led to my next post…

Delaying Release of Orange Crush for a Few Days July 10, 2008

Due to the complexity of the install, I decided to hold off release of this template until I make it easier! Many have expressed interest in the theme and it should be posted very soon.

Simple CSS BANS WordPress Template July 11, 2008
BANS Template for WordPress - Simple CSS July 12, 2008

After quite a bit of testing and installing on several sites of my own, the BANS SimpleCSS Template for WordPress was released! There have been a couple very minor glitches with the template thus far, but they are insignificant as far as the value of the template goes, and will be addressed in this coming weeks posts.

Also, the week would not be complete without mentioning that my wonderful wife Kim had a birthday on July 12th! Happy Birthday!

Week Ahead on The Niche Store Builder

Just like last week, planning of the week ahead is always fun for me! It also makes it very easy to follow a set posting guide and have a plan before the week begins.

  1. Monday, July 13th - Using the FireFox Firebug Extension to understand a site Structure
  2. Tuesday, July 13th - Posts responding to Questions from the Simple CSS BANS Template
  3. Weds, July 14th - A Few simple customizations to the Simple CSS BANS Template

On Thursday morning, Kim and I decided to run off to the beach for a few days…  We will return on Sunday afternoon. Monday, July 21st, I am going to announce a contest here at the NSB site! I have spoken to several sponsors thus far and have some exciting prizes to give away to you all! So far, I have the following:

From The PepperJam Network

  1. 5 Copies of phpPro WordPress plugin for WordPress!
  2. 5 Copies of BANS for the PepperJam Network!

From WordTracker Keyword Research

  1. 10 FREE 1 Month FULL ACCESS Memberships!

I am still hard at work on a few more vendors for this contest… and should have more news by the time the contest launches next week!

Mark

    Hey Mark,

I for one don’t mind one tincy wincy bit if you decide to produce, direct and star in a BANS Miniseries lasting 8 continuous hours with no commercials.

As far as I’m concerned I’m surprised one of your videos hasn’t been discovered by the Academy Awards committee and been nominated for best short film of the year.

The only thing that could make them better is if you held a long pointer in your hand like a real teacher while you pointed to your black board full of BANS notes and lectured us from a podium. And maybe once in awhile slammed your pointer onto your desk with authority and shouted “WAKE UP CLASS”. I might pay some big bucks to sit through those videos :-)

You just keep on talking and I’ll keep on listening no matter how long you talk.

    Great stuff!

    Mark
