Essentially - once you have purchased or registered a domain name (www.your-domain-name-here.com) though a registar like GoDaddy, it can be parked on a hosting server. The pages that are served to visitors are usually full of links and advertisements that are relative to what you populate into a keywords form. Wikipedia has a great explanation of the domain parking practice at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_parking
Can you make money by parking domains? Sure - there are many people who do nothing but buy domains, new and expiring, and monetize them with google adsense or other ppc ad sources.
A side benefit to domain parking lies in the fact that you have the option to show a “Domain for Sale” advertisement on top of the page. You never if the day will come that someone was looking for that specific name, and makes you an offer you just cannot refuse! Take a look at the original and subsequent owners of the www.iphone.com domain, originally purchased a long time ago in 1995, (way before Al Gore invented the internet) until Steve Jobs and Apple needed it for their newest product. In July of this year - the domain owner sold it for an undisclosed amount… but rumors speculate much more than a million dollars!
