What you Learn Today will Last a Lifetime!
I’m not too quick to subscribe to someone elses blog. In total, I think I am only subscribed to about 15-20 different blogs, but I visit about 10-20 others just about every day! Tonight, during my regular blog rounds, I stumbled upon a post from Caroline Middlebrook that really had me looking deep inside myself. If you have not read her blog, I suggest stopping in and visiting today. She has a fantastic and free ebook about creating niche mini sites with wordpress that has quite a bit of useful information! Imagine if we took what she talks about in her ebook, combined it with Build a Niche Store and created a hybrid of sorts… somewhat like the Hybrid Golf Clubs site.
Caroline’s post, Internet Marketing Doesn’t Have to be About Money, really hit home for me when she started talking about just how few blogs about making money online, really lay down all of the methods in a clear and concise method. It is much more a case where you get this piece at one blog, that piece at another blog… and before long, you have a well rounded set of skills to succeed in the affiliate or niche marketing arena. While the entire message of her post is a bit different, my takeaway was the part that affected me personally.
Why did it hit home for me? Simple… in order to succeed at affiliate marketing, you really need a combination of several skills in order to reach your goals. It may take years to find and hone every one of those skills, and in my case, I started learning website design 12 years ago and search optimization techniques, 7-8 years ago, when it became important. I have applied and honed those skills throughout the past “many” years, but overall… I still stink at several others! The skills I learned early on have helped me in what I do today… just like they will help you in a much shorter period of time, since we have been applying them in a very specific way.
But Mark – Aren’t you Helping Us learn to Make Money on the Internet?
In reality, no. I am helping you learn a few different skills that are very specific to search optimization of an existing eBay affiliate script. The end result of your efforts will allow you to make money, but its the application of the skills you learn here and elsewhere, that will determine how much!
Look at it this way… If I was digging holes for a fence and you were helping me… would fence holes be the only thing you could do with that shovel when we were done? Probably not… The best part of everything you learn here is that it can be applied to just about ANY website or monetization strategies you decide to pursue for many years to come.
In order to succeed at earning money with web based applications, you need to know at least a little, about quite a few subjects.
-
Basic html for editing content and page layout
-
Keyword research for Niche Targeting
-
Best practices for Search Engine Optimization
-
Researching Niche Markets to determine Profitability
-
Basic hosting and File Management Procedures
-
Image editing for the web
-
Pay Per Click Advertising
-
Link Building for search relevance
-
Understanding your Visitor Trends
-
Adsense and other Monetization Strategies
-
Identifying strategies that work and those that are a waste of time.
-
Diversification of your Efforts!
From the list above, I can tell you now… I am very good at just about 75% of the practices! The remainder, I can only share my own experiences and point you to other places where someone else is better! I’m good like that… knowing my own limitations.
Over the next few weeks, after we conclude the niche Store Empire series, I am not going to walk away from Build a Niche Store in any way, it is a great money maker! I am however going to show you how to take the basics of what you have learned from BANS and apply it to other monetization methods as well. Between all of us, we can all continue to share what is working on each of the skills above and grow our diversified empires together!
Like the title says… What you Learn Today will Last a Lifetime!

Great post Mark! It reminds me of two Jim Rohn quotes:
“Life asks us to make measurable progress in reasonable time. That’s why they make those fourth grade chairs so small.”
and
“Don’t just let your business or your job make something for you, let it make something of you.”
Your list of subjects is quite overwhelming but your inspiration encourages me to just learn a little everyday and with time I will have the skills necesarry to succeed online.
With much appreciation,
Jamie
Great post
I am very aware that sometimes I am much too impatient, and want to be earning right away. You have just remindd me that things have to be learned and practiced first, and there is also life outside earning comissions.
Have a good day
Do any of you ever feel like your in WAY over your head :) i do.. but then I sit back and think and try and take it all in and look at the big picture. I’ve read where people say that you can build a BANS site and use the generic template and you don’t have to color it and you don’t have to update it.. just set it and forget it and you can make money.. And, there are some that have made a money doing that.. FOR ME, it’s the challenge, it’s fooling with computers and the internet, which I love to do, and I’m learning something EVERY DAY! That’s good for the brain hahaha. I read the comment above where Mark talked about his experience with web design and optimization techniques, and he struggles at times, and I’m like, can I do this? YES I CAN! You get out of it what you put into it. And there are so many super folks out there willing to help, like Mark and Rochelle and many others. I’ve built 4 stores so far and I’ve spent a little bit of money and a LOT of time. But as I look back, there are many things that are getting easier, I’ve learned how to do alot on my own and with help, and I want to keep learning. If all of my stores fell flat on their face and never made a dime, which I know won’t happen, I can honestly say it was all worth it because if nothing else, I’m doing something I enjoy, I’ve met some great people, and I’ve learned things that I can apply to other parts of my life and who knows where that could take me! I love the book I’m reading and I talk about it a little at my http://www.squidoo.com/foundmyniche I’ve started (shameless Plug) ha! But there is sooo much more to life than making money! And I love this new venture for so many more reasons than the final buck!
Ok, done rambling :)
Hey Mark – I love your list of skills that you need. I was pleased that I at least knew what you were talking about!
I have to say that I’ve learned more from yours and Rochelle’s blogs than any other internet business-related sites. And it has applications for my other sites too – that’s what’s so great. It all builds to make all of us a lot better at marketing etc.
You rule!
Marilla
